The death toll from Burma's devastating cyclone has now risen to more than 22,000, state media have said.

Another 41,000 are missing three days after Cyclone Nargis hit the country, causing a huge tidal surge to sweep inland, according to state radio.

Yeah, I just heard 10,000 too

I thought it was kind of odd while watching the Today Show this morning (when the death toll was 4,000), that the news item got a 5 second mention each half hour before moving onto fluff pieces. Pretty sad IMHO.

Sad either way of course.

As a Burmese person, I prefer "Burma" over "Myanmar" simply because the name Myanmar comes from the Military Government and all it represents. But the world has mixed feelings about the name due to politics.

The US, which released an immediate funding package of $250,000 (£127,000) to be channelled through the UN, said that Burmese authorities had refused permission for an American disaster assistance response team to enter.

Nothing more really needs to be said about their government.

The real figure's probably 100 people, but they inflated the number so the people in power can get free food and money.

assuming they did lose ~15,000 it'll take them 2 months to replace that according to their population growth rate

And what about the US refusing international aid after Katrina?

Whoa! I didn't think people were allowed to leave.

I heard this on the radio when I woke up; and my first thought was "good luck getting aid in to the citizens." seems to be the case with a few agencies still awaiting permission to enter.

sad..

The U.S. isn't a backwater 3rd world country. We should have been able to handle it without international assistance (yes, I know the U.S. dropped the ball in regards to Katrina).
