Americans forget that the German soldiers fought just a hard and bravely as the Allies did.Originally posted by: Horus
Let us never forget the sacrifices made in the name of freedom on this day, 60 years ago
Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha, Utah, plus the Caen and Orne bridges, taken by the Airborne troops.
Don't forget the German troops that died by the hands of our veterans at those beaches.
All should be remembered for their sacrifice.
I have seen many Allied and Axis soldiers pay each other respect for their sacrifices.
This day is also used to remember the vets of WW1. Theirs was a terrible war fought under horrendous conditions.
As Canada remembers the Juno beach landings, we also remember names like Vimy Ridge, Dieppe and Ypres.
And believe me, despite what I have read in American newspapers, the French have never forgotten the sacrifices of the Allies that liberated them. Much of the Normandy coast is land that has been given to countries like the US and Canada as a sign of that remembering.
Flanders Field was written by a Canadian:
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
