Completely Agree. Almost forgot about it with everything else going on. Looks like I have to buy some flowers and stop by a few cemetaries today where some of the vets who made it home are buried. They are often forgotten about cause they made it home, but they still made sacrifices by fighting there and loosing their buddies on that fateful day.

Anyone read the new book "Beyond Band of Brothers"?
I just saw it advertised. Apparently Dick Winters has written his own book about his experiences.

I wish I could meet the man and shake his hand. I owe him a big "Thank you" for helping me to better understand my grandfather's time in the Airborne(he was in the 82nd).

You may be thinking of Stephen E. Ambrose; but certainly both deserve a handshake.

To all of those who fought in a battle that we can only barely invision. To those who crossed the sand, dropped in from the sky, rode the armor, my heart, my respect and my debt of gratitude to each and every one of you.

I was born two months before Pearl Harbor, and I was raised through and following WW II so I am very aware of what they did and how much we owe to those who fought.

Those who are now so willing to squander and compromise the freedoms those troops fought to preserve under a false guise of "security" need to remember the reasons we fought in that war and to consider how different, and more compelling, they were than any "reasons" offered for the current war in Iraq. Not doing so betrays the memory of those before us who gave so much.

15,000 of my fellow Canadians rushed Juno beach on D-Day in 1944.. they fought valiantly and took command of the second most heavilly fortified beach (Omaha being the most heavilly fortified). The brave Canadian men, at the end of the day, had avanced soo far into enemy territory that they were all awarded medals...

A french soldier, who was told that allied forces has taken Juno beach and were moving forward, was quoted as saying "C'est Impossible" (that's impossible), he was then told it was Canadian soldiers who took Juno Beach and he remarked "Ah, les Canadians.. oui c'et possible" (Oh yes the Canadians.. yes it's possible then).

How our military has dwindled from the 3rd largest force in the world to a small band of brave soldiers is a story to tell. I suppose Canadians only really rise up to challenges as a last resort. After all.. we are just like Americans, save we cherish diplomacy first.
