For those of you that have Iopeners out there or want an easy way to network your computer you can pick one of these up. Ive been using one with my hacked iopener and it works quite nicely (if only the jailbait linux distro would support it properly). Its 29 with a 25$ rebate, not sure when its over, but I got it yesterday so it should be valid. The rebate form should print out with your receipt. Its only 10bt so its not exactly super fast, but it does the job easily enuf.

hey, I was looking around and did some reading on pricematching...If you can, I think you can price match it with compUSA, they sell this one for $24.95 There is no ad for this but I guess you can have them call in and check the price.CC has pricematching for 110%

UPDATE : just bought mine pricematched it with CompUSA
cost of $24.48

=)

I got one yeterday too. It's got a cool translucent case to it. Not bad for $5. Also, the 10MB speed shouldn't really matter since the USB portion of the connectio won't have much more throughput than that anyway. They make a 10/100 version, but I'm not sure what the advantage would be since it could never go anywhere near 100MBps.

In addition, CC has the following items for sale:
D-Link WebCam = $10 after rebate
D-Link PCI NIC = $5 after rebate
Generic 56k = $5 after rebate

USB has an upper limit of 13Mbit / sec. a 10/100 card would be more like 10/13. Not too much of a preformance increase.

CC=Circuit sh^H^HCity.

Most of the deals @ abbreviation are for some big store. OD=officedepot, OM=officemax, etc. Just think of big stores. If that doesnt work, big websites is next.

I thought nics were rated at Mbps(bits not bytes)not MBps. That would give a 10/100 nic a rating of around 1.25/12.5 MB. It takes 8 bits to make a byte. So a 10/100 on a usb would make some difference.

Dogcatcher: Yes NIC speeds are measured in in Megabits per second, however so are USB bus speeds. So the point stays valid. A 100mbit nic usb adapter would not be faster then a 10mbit one, esspecially since USB bus speeds are shared (meaning that if you have any other attached devices such as a video camera, the two share bandwith)

Also if you guys are talking about a clear case then the adapter is a 650TX not a 650, the TX is better in that it has windows2000 drivers and some people have been having problems with the 650 randomly dropping connections. I have a 650 and have not enountered any problems as of yet, if I do Dlink can do a free replacement. (I got my 650 for $7.50 including second day shipping and no rebates from value america after a mis-price and value dollars)

yeah the 10mb/100mb debate is mute. you wont even see close to real 10mb PCI card performance with USB. I mean it works nicely for the job (and the price) but it wont match the speed of a real interface card in a computer. as for buying a 10/100 usb adaptor, there is pretty much no reason at all to do so (tho some guy mentioned he did because he had a 100bt only hub so 10bt wouldnt work)

tomcat: no it is just the 650 and not the TX. AFAIK the 650s were recently redesigned (or just put in a new case, whatever) to look different. As for your ordering from VA... wow how the hell did you pull that one off? I ordered *5* times from there trying to get this same adaptor for about 9.00 after VA$ and EVERY DAMN TIME I got the WRONG item. they sent a Dlink PCI card not a USB adaptor. that was almost 6 months ago and I am just now supposed to be getting my credit card recredited for the money from the last of those orders

The deal is good until Saturday for those wondering. There's a few other good rebate deals, such as a free 4 button/scrollmouse from kensington ($30 - $30 rebates). It's not the best mouse, and it kinda fits weird, but it's not too bad for free. There's a free joystick available too, and that generic 56k modem has worked wonders for myself and a few other people that I know bought it a while ago when there was a similar deal.

Also, the V3 racing wheels for the playstation were ringing up at $6.99 today, not sure if that was an error or what, might want to try that out.

I picked up the cheap webcam too....it was also clear & there was a D-Link brochure & it appears that they have an entire line of stuff that is clear plastic. This one IS the 650. It says so on the box & it looks exactly like the 650TX in the brochure.

I went to the CC website and took a look at the rebate. The terms and conditions weren't clear with regards to having the rebate good for only one item or if you could combine the items in some fashion.

Anybody know? TIA.

I asked if there were any rules against that and he called and talked to someone and they said they didnt think so, but they werent sure, so they guy said he would ring it up as 2 separate transactions (I bought 2) so Id get the rebate

I got one Tuesday, had trouble with random network dropping. Got a replacement on Wednesday and am having the same problem. What a pain.
Note also that CC has a 15% restocking fee (on the pre-rebate price) that they will attempt to take off any atempt to return for refund.
This product has already been more hassle than it's worth, in my case.

They do have 16MB Smart Media cards for $20 ($35-15), which is at least a warm deal.

The 10/100 isn't just for speed purposes... many people have Fast Ethernet networks that won't connect to a 10 only card.

If you walk into the store, they should have weekly fliers that will have the specials in them. Usually my CC only carries a few of the items discounted, but this time, they had lots....and I didn't even go till mid-week. Usually they sell out on Sunday morning.

trend,

the D-Link NIC is a DFE-530TX+. Yes, it does work under Linux (the driver disk even contains the kernel module). I don't know much about the quality of that card though. Had the DFE-530TX which broke down last week and took a hub with it (or the other way round??). My roommate's card, connected to the same hub, stayed intact(different model). Anyway, can't complain about a $5 NIC...

The rebate came with the receipt and you need to mail it to CC.

With regards to the 15% restocking fee on computer products, they will often not charge you the 15% fee in the following circumstances:
-The item is defective (even if you aren't exchanging it)
-You are buying something similar at an equal or greater price
-You make a good excuse

cabezon: any 10bt ethernet adapter will connect to any 10/100 lan (which by definition support both 10 and 100). Or do you mean that the 10/100 adapter is for people who only have 100 capable networks? I mentioned that already if that was what you meant. Still I dont know of many 100bt only hubs/switches. (not that they dont exist, they are just a rarity)
