It's probably not the world's greatest NAS box out-the-box, but the fact that you can install custom applications on it makes it super-useful. I don't know about you guys, but I'd love to have ONE machine that's web- (or at least telnet-accessible) from any computer in my house that, if I want to torrent something, can be set to do so.

Not avaliable for shipping, and the closest pick-up store is 48 miles away from me.

Bummer!

Bummer!

I am wondering if it is possible to get it shipped from that store to your local store (when you place an order at your local store).

Not a bad deal. I see one available about 20 miles from me and wondering if I should buy it.

FWIW:

For PATA HDs, rather than the newer SATA.
Does it have a small fan for cooling?

Two high-speed USB 2.0 ports and one 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet port
Unfortunately intended more for Linux boxes(?):
2 USB 2.0 Ports for external hard drives formatted with EXT2, EXT3, FAT32, or NTFS (read only)
The 1000 gigabit is becoming more important, as time passes.

So, wireless could be considered an optional bonus?

Unfortunately, the security is only 64/128 bit WEP, rather than the latest and greatest WPA2.
That's a negative.
D-Link site says WPA (not WPA2) available on B model, only.
Also, other advanced features on B model only.
(hyperlink to DLINK specs)

But maybe fixable, with third party software? Dunno'

This good price for selling of stock / inventory of less advanced "A" model?

1) PATA vs. SATA - True. It probably does not matter for a NAS. You will not be able to use the full SATA throughput over the network (especially wireless) anyway.

2) It does have a small fan. Even though the official specs claim support for a 250GB max HD, I had a 400GB hard drive in there. The fan would get loud during a prolonged operation. I don't know if my unit was faulty or the 400GB hard drive was getting too hot or it was a fault of the 3rd-party firmware. It definitely makes you wonder if keeping this unit on 24/7 (as you would ideally want to do) is a viable option.

3) This is definitely intended not just for Linux. You can get it up and running in Windows with ease.

4) I did not use its wireless capability, so I cannot comment on that.

5) You definitely want to have a revB unit. I bought mine close to 2 years ago, used on eBay. It was a revB. So, I really doubt you will find a RevA at your local store. If you do, all you wasted is gas. If you don't plan to load third-party apps on it, a revA is probably just as good.

is there a way to find out if its revA or revB without opening it (from the serial number maybe)

When I bought mine, the revision number was clearly on the UPC/Serial number label on the box.

I have one (stock firmware). It is a useful device, but the performance is definately underwhelming. Even switching my LAN to gigabit did not make much of a difference. I am in the process of building a small uATX system to replace it (probably with FreeNAS). Still, the price is right -- if you keep in mind the limitation. I use mine just for weekly backups.

Note that this box has saved the day a couple of times. I have had laptops (one belonging to a friend and one to my wife) die. It is a simple matter to pop Ubunto into the laptop and copy the important data to the NAS before nuking the laptop.

Got stuck with a RevA. Boo! It also will not use a drive with data already on it. At least it wouldn't use mine any way. Now I've got to figure out how to offload the 200 gigs that are on the drive so I can format it for use with this device. Again, boo! Their site states a max of 250 GB, but it recognizes my 500. Then again, maybe thats why it won't use the data that's already there.
