Hi guys,
I am having trouble routing my Pacific Bell DSL connection using this router. The internet works fine when I directly connect the DSL line to my computer. However, when I plug the line through the router, my computer no works with internet. I have set both my tcp/ip properties and the dsl setting to dynamic ip and I have done several power switch cycles.
Does anyone know if I have to do anything special to my router? Or is it that Pacific Bell does something that won't let me route my connection? I hope someone has had experience with this and has a solution. Thank you so much.

Sound like authentication problem (id & password).

hmmm....I don't think Pacific Bell DSL uses an identification name and password do they? Because the DSL seems to work fine without going through the router, and I don't remember Pacific Bell giving me a name and password.
Thanx for the suggestion though. Any other ideas? I really need to get this working...

Hmmm, well, hmmm.

As far as I can recall, PacBell is using PPPOE and WinPOET for authentication (may be they change it recently).
The PPPOE software inserts the ID and Password automatically to the connection; thus, it works from your computer.

Your Routers does not know this info (kind of dumb ha).

So, find the info, look at the router manual and type the username and password in; make sure PPPOE is checked. Set the router to obtain IP automatically (unless you have a static account).

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch them off, when you switch them on again, it will take a minute, and the Router will automatically connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WinPOET and whatever else, the ISP dished you.

The Router?s PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

Working through the Router in a DSL, connection should yield faster smoother Internet connection.

But then I was wrong more then once during my life time.

oh wow, that is a lot more clear. I will definitely try to see if I can get that information. I was unaware that Pacific Bell already did that to my computer.

Where can I find what username and password PPPOE put into my computer already? Is it under some type of TCP/IP properties or written into a log file? Or do I actually have to call Pac Bell?

Thank you so much JackMDS, you've been very kind.

btw, my bro's name is Jack, just thought that was interesting...

Usually during installation the PPPOE program (WinPOET), creates a file that displays on the screen the Id and PW. It is my guess the file may be saved in the WinPOET directory on your Hard Drive, use Win Explorer to look at the directory, and read the Text files that are there. You can also try to call PacBell and ask them for the info.

In addition, take a look at the connection setting in Internet Explorer. Direct PPPOE connection use a form of DialUp protocol. The Router needs LAN protocol. When using the Router you have to change the Connection, to use LAN only (never Dial a connection).
