D-link wireless Access Point DWL-1000AP on clearance at Staples B&M for $26.85

This afternoon at Staple store in LA, CA, I spotted the D-link Wireless Access Point DWL-1000AP on clearance for $26.85. The original price was $89.50.

The sku # is 458462

Be warned that this is a disconitinued product from D-link. In addition, it only suports WEP encryption of only 40 bit, which might not be compatible with the newer 802.11b devices.

Time to make baby yet ?

No, 'a' is newer, faster.

does it scan at that price or need an override ?
If it scan at that price then most likely it is national, if not then YMMV.

Actually, there is a firmware update to make it support 128bit. I have this AP, and when I got it I specifically picked this one out because it offered MAC address filtering, a feature usually lacking in low-end APs. It is older technology now, but still a good AP. I'm going to head out to look for another tomorrow.

this man is a mind reader, If I could get it to work with my other ap to give a better signal to other parts of the house this woudl be excellent.

Also just so I have an idea of my competition anyone in Cincy thinking of clearing out the stock of these (just want to know how early I have to drag myself out of bed heh BTW what time does staples open?)

Based on what you had stated, this is not a nationwide clearance then. The manager had to override the price.
I bought one, and there was one left at the Staples on Azusa, W.Covina. I might have to return mine if it doesn't support at least 64bit WEP encryption, since all my wireless cards only support 64bit or 128 bits encription when WEP is enabled. According to the other poster, there is a FW upgrade for this device that allows it to support up to 128bits encryption. I will try it out.

The D-Link 1000AP can do 128bit WEP after a firmware upgrade. Mine is doing it fine.

Remember that 40 bit and 64-bit WEP are *identical*. Different names for the same thing... you can only set 40 bits of the key yourself. Confusing, but true universally.

My 1000AP with 40-bit WEP peaks out at around 3.5MBps, and seems to have trouble sustaining a full load.. it starts pausing. Other than that, it's been reliable with a number of WiFi cards. Range is good. Web config interface is nice, and it does have MAC restrictions available. I paid $179 for mine long ago.

MRDzone: Just to let you know, when I went to PM my laptop today at Tri-County staples, they had 9 in stock. I bought all 9 and will be eBaying em.

I also went to just about every other store in the city (kenwood, etc) and ended up with 32 more. So I'll keep one and eBay the rest!

OK, I'm just kidding man, I really didn't get any. They didn't have any at the Tri-County staples (which I did buy a laptop from today) and I'm too damned lazy to get one anywhere else. If you get one, I'll buy it off of ya!

Checked the Staples here in El Cajon, CA. They have them on clearance for $89 down from $170 something.

They do have some other stuff on clearance at good prices. An HP 8200 external usb burner. Just the box, no cables etc for $20. They also have a Jornada 568 for $172.

Same in Phoenix. 1 store had 1 for $89, definately not worth it. If anyone does pick an extra one or two up, please PM me. I was hoping to get two to try to bridge my network into other rooms.

Don't bother in SoCal, unless you're in Garden Grove. They have 3 at that store, but they're still $89.50. Nothing in Riverside, San Bernardino, or surrounding areas.

OH MAN LOL I forgot about this thread, I read that first part though and was like SHIZ, anyway I'm gonna head up to kenwood tommorrow to ship some stuff and go to Barnes and Noble so i'll report back to ya on the state of the staples union then
