Its back again for under $100 AR.

I have this one myself and I don't have a negative word to say about it.

In fact, now that I think about it, I do think I have ever had to reset it due to failure - though I must say that is definitely YMMV.

EDIT: $83 Frys.com - 3/04

Awesome router! My brother has this one and I'm very tempted to get it got this price. Can't beat the price for wireless G and gigabit.

It's a good stable router. The Ubicom CPU and the corresponding OS are designed specifically with QoS in mind, so it does that very well. The only downside is you don't have multiple third-party firmwares to play with, and you'll never have third-party firmware in fact, because the Ubicom stuff are all close-source. That means no additional features like OpenVPN, CIFS, SSH access, and all those fun things. No cool bandwidth monitoring like what Tomato offers. But if all you need is a stable router, this is a good choice, esp if you have VoIP. This router does QoS for VoIP *very well*.

However, if your laptop has a draft-N wireless adapter, I would highly recommend spending $25 more to get the DIR-655 instead, which is the successor to the DGL-4300 and is draft-N compliant. With draft-N, you get better speed and range. (In comparison, the DGL-4300 is Super-G with max 108Mbps throughput.) The DIR-655 also has a faster processor (Ubicom IP 5160/5170 vs the IP3023 in the DGL-4300 - for performance comparison, look at the "Overall Performance" table on p4 of this document: http://www.ubicom.com/pdfs/whitepapers/IP5K-DWP-CMP-12.pdf).

Docinthebox,

has draft-N finally been ratified?

when it is can they just push a firmware update to the DIR-655 to make it fully compatible? i've been holding off on draft N for this reason...

I'm not sure if a firmware update is enough. The wireless NIC in the router could be involved as well. In this regard, the Asus WL-500W may be a good buy as Asus guarantees compatibility with the 802.11n standard when it's finalized.

Those are the lesser models. The DGL 4300 is the Mack Truck with a Cadillac Ride: It's both luxurious yet tough and dependable.

Pretty good ownage on the router functions, but the Gigabit Switch of the DGL4300 stills
seems better if you check out the "Maximium Simultaneous Connections" chart. Just something
to consider if that is important.

Nice deal OP, the 4300 is a great product. Looks like it's in-stock with free S&H at Outpost for $99.

As for performance, I'd love to see Toms SmallNetBuilder throw a IPCop/Smoothwal/ClarkConnect linux firewall into the mix to see how they stack up against the "appliance" style wireless routers they usually review. I've tried a variety of different solutions over the years including a couple of DD-WRT flashed devices and nothing has yet touched the features and performance of the ClarkConnect 4.0 Linux box I just replaced my last router with.

I just bought the D-link DIR-655 along with the compatible PCI NIC and WOW! I cannot say enough good things about it. The range is amazing...my old 802.11G AP would barely make it to the front of my house while this thing gives me Excellent quality every time. I was able to download over 900Kb/s over bittorrent over the wireless. The gigabit switch is a nice bonus as well. I got mine from Best buy for $125 (no rebates) about a week ago. I know that 802.11N is not out yet, but it is nice to see these kinds of speeds and range even now.
