We evolved with symbiotic parasitic infections (not to be confused with harmful infestations due to immune system dysfunction or exposure to a different species), and was the rule until a hundred or so years ago. Some have even postulated that perhaps the absence of certain symbiotic parasites is involved in some of our modern illnesses or chronic conditions.

If it's "symbiotic," then I guess it's not a "parasite."

I'm always impressed at how indelicate surgery is. They appear to use less care working on living things than I do assembling a computer.

Apparently you've never heard of politicians. Slightly more seriously, the notion is that a lot of the more benign parasites secrete chemicals that relax the immune system. Since we evolved alongside the parasites, without their influence our natural immune response is too strong and we end up with autoimmune diseases.

That idea is still mostly unproven, but research is being done.

It could be more complicated even. It could also be a more of a 2 step issue.

For example, first you get infected by some virus or bacteria that produces some molecule that looks like something that is naturally from the host (you). After that pathogen has been defeated by the immune system, the immune system starts to target certain cells in the body that are "self".
That is called molecular mimicry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molecular_mimicry

Molecular mimicry is defined as the theoretical possibility that sequence similarities between foreign and self-peptides are sufficient to result in the cross-activation of autoreactive T or B cells by pathogen-derived peptides. Despite the promiscuity of several peptide sequences which can be both foreign and self in nature, a single antibody or TCR (T cell receptor) can be activated by even a few crucial residues which stresses the importance of structural homology in the theory of molecular mimicry. Upon the activation of B or T cells, it is believed that these "peptide mimic" specific T or B cells can cross-react with self-epitopes, thus leading to tissue pathology (autoimmunity).[1] Molecular mimicry is a phenomenon that has been just recently discovered as one of several ways in which autoimmunity can be evoked. A molecular mimicking event is, however, more than an epiphenomenon despite its low statistical probability of occurring and these events have serious implications in the onset of many human autoimmune disorders.

While at the same time you carry a parasite or get infected afterwards, that dumbs down your immune system enough to prevent the autoimmune disorder to happen or to be worse then it is. Perhaps a reason why some people just are more healthy than others. A constant battle.

I also always wondered why some people stay thin while they eat a lot and do not exercise more than a "normal" person. Perhaps their immune system is non stop fighting a parasite or pathogen.

While peeling my potatoes, i came up with an idea that fits sort of to your idea :

Let say we have a person with a genetic defect that causes auto immune diseases. That defect could be a defect in coding for the autoimmune regulator AIRE. Making it less effective. That person starts a family and passes the genetic defect on to the offspring. Now this as a whole develops into a family. In this family, people do not get old because of a given autoimmune disease. For whatever reason, one of the offspring , let's say the daughter gets infected by a parasite that also regulates the immune system, dumbing it down. She seems to be a lot less affected by the genetically caused autoimmune disease.
Now the daughter gets married, has a child and while passing on the genetic defect, she also passes on the parasite. Voilá , the child seems to be auto immune disease free. The child grow up, get married and starts a family.
Continuing the passing on of the defect and the parasite. As long as the parasite is there, the autoimmune disease seems to be gone or a lot less problematic.

Woah that's insane. Looks like spaghetti lol. You would think that many worms would just come out with the poo or they could give some kind of laxative that forces them out through bowel movement.

They normally use medications in about 95% of cases, but in severe cases, they have to operate to get them out.
