Which vid card drivers have you tried? I have a e1705 with a 7900gs with the 174.14 drivers. So far it has given me no problems. Drivers are stable and I'm able to overclock 20%. Try also to get the dell fan utility. I think it's called the I8kfan. This allows you to see your temp and control fan speeds if your vid card is overheating for some reason. Before you install new drivers make sure to purge any previous vid card installation on your computer.

Since it runs in Safe Mode and dsiplays OK, it would seem that the vid card is OK. Then the problems come when in normal mode. That would suggest a driver problem.

Your A/C adapter should handle any range of voltage from 100 to 240 VAC at 2 amps, 50 to 50 Hz. I don't think your line voltage variations caused the problem.

Water damage could be involved. How does it run for normal work, i.e., no games? Could just be overheating of the vid circuitry due to gameing. The fan check is a good one.

alright thank you all for your answers, what I have in mind for the problem is to verifiy if its indeed the gpu, i will try to find a local shop that has a replacement gpu and pay some cash to at least confirm that the gpu is bad.

if the gpu is bad, i suppose i can buy perhaps This

OP: not sure about your model, buy mt m1330 the vid card is build into the motherboard, so yours might be the same - it's also very expensive to replace, so i'm not sure that is a good way to test.

I'd get a whoppix CD, some some live linux os that runs off a cd, see if you can do some video stress tests and see if you still have the same problem - that would pretty much tell you if its a driver problem or not.

My guess is vid card. I do Dell warranty work and had to do one of these recently. Same symptoms, same laptop, same card.

thanks for the responses, yes I have tried on external monitor with same problem, I will try that linux stress test when I get the chance.

the weird thing is that many times it boots up normally without any green lines, but will eventually freeze / lock up in vista, or display the odd graphics I uploaded before.

I hope that it is just the video card, as It's easy to replace and $150~ (Ati X1800 Exchange).
