It has a Parallel Port?!?!?!?! They still use those???? I would think that if you are going for miniaturization, you lose anything you possibly can... so that really huge port (relatively speaking) that is taking up the space of 3 USB ports... that can go. The Serial Port, it can go too. Ooh, PS/2 ports... lose em.

So you are left with Ethernet, lots of USB, Audio, and Video Out (however you want to do it, heck with all the space you just saved, you could probably have 6+ USB ports, 1 Ethernet, 2.1Audio, DVI, VGA, SVideo, Composite, and HDMI on there... and if you really have to the legacy stuff, get an adapter.

I don't know, I guess that could be considered harsh, and it is only $69 which is a nice price if the performance is there for a HTPC rig. Just wish it didn't have the legacy stuff...

repost

As for legacy ports, one popular use of these mini boards is for embedded systems. Some of those are invariably used to control other devices, which often are through parallel or serial ports.

This board would not be good for HTPC because the IGP is kind of weak, plus it only has a VGA output. PCI slot would limit what you can put in there GPU-wise.

I think your first instinct to be interested is right. This can be an incredibly cheap solution for a quiet (no CPU fan required), small, basic machine. Just compare it to VIA solutions--much more oomph for a lot less $$!

I've been waiting for one of these to test drive. Also, I'm gonna build a dedicated fax machine out of one once my testing is done.
Right now I'm thinking of buying a second D201GLY for the additional 133MHz and because I may be able to snag one for <$60.
For some applications I really wanted the serial port for a laptop hard drive. The D201GLY with the parallel header requires the purchase of an adapter if I needed to use a laptop hard drive. I may be wrong but I think the serial port for a 2.5" laptop hard drive is the same as for a 3.5" hard drive.
Here's a link to Intel's Overview.

bupkus, do you mean the SATA port versus IDE? For SATA, yes both notebook drives and desktop drives use the same connectors. No adaptor needed.

Thanks.
As I suspected, but confirmation is nice.

the d201gly2 is actually faster than the d201gly because the 2 is core 2 based, and the 1 is based on the 32bit only dothan core.

also there are a few listings of oem ones onebay, but i havent seen an actual store carrying it yet.

hans, you have no idea how pleased I would be if that were true. Why? Because I'm planning on buying a few and using for kid's games.
I found a post by someone that they were able to produce a 3DMarks2001 score of 1660 with the D201GLY. This is actually passable for the DirectX 7 games I'm planning on buying for these Christmas presents. With a faster core I'm hoping for a score approaching 2k. Obviously, I wish there were a faster IGP but still this would suffice as most if not all those games are 2D.
Still, if I did want to speed up the graphics some I could use a low profile PCI card, but that would push the price up with uncertain performance results.

We succeeded in learning, that this nonconformity is caused by the passage of processor to Conroe- L core. Let us recall that Celeron 215 (1.33 GHz) was based on mobile core yonah, and it do not support 64-bit expansions. The TDP level of this processor was equal to 27 W. Passage to the desktop core Conroe- L will allow not only the 64- bit expansions support , but also will lower level TDP to 19 W. It is understandable that increase in speed will occur, in spite of reduction in the frequency from 1.33 GHz to 1.2 GHz.

The processor celeron 220 (1.2 GHz) will be more expensive than its predecessor by four dollars, since its wholesale price is equal to $58. If we considers that this processor will be used in intel D201GLY2 motherboard on base of chipset SiS 662, whose retail price will not exceed $90-100 (cost of processor is included on), addition in price can distress potential buyers. However, increase in speed and 64-bit applications compensate in certain degree the price increase .

bupkus, have you considered getting a cheap Sempron and Geforce6xxx/7xxx or AMD 690G chipset board? You should be able to get such a combo for around $100 and it would be worlds better than the SiS IGP for gaming. Use this $20 case, add RAM and a HDD and you're set for a budget computer that can play games that the SiS would struggle with.

Yes, that has always been the question I've asked myself. Fact is, I'm just in love with low power computing. And since I'm limiting my venture to DirectX 7.0 games, if the D201GLY2 proves to be enough I'll be tempted to make that my choice.

However, there is the question of this bundled combo at newegg:
  • AMD Sempron LE-1150 Sparta 2.0GHz Socket AM2 45W Processor Model SDH1150DEBOX - Retail
  • ASRock ALIVENF6G-VSTA AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 or 6150SE / nForce 430 (Depend on the version) Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
Both for under $100 delivered! Pretty sweet with that 45W cpu.

Edit: I forgot to say. Somewhere I heard about that case you recommended and I currently have 2, still in the box on the shelf.

Probably not.

That "Sparta" chip is a low wattage version.

I also bought two of those $20 cases. Sold one, still have the other one.

Are there issues with the Sparta chip? I consider the bundle I indicated a nice performance step up from the Little Valley 2.

Why would there be? It is basically a low wattage Sempron, which is basically an Athlon64 with less cache, which is basically half of a dual core x2.

Good to hear.
However... I had an opportunity today to install some software on a D201GLY. Now I'm beginning to be swayed by Zap's comments about a cheap AMD processor and a motherboard with something like an 6150 IGP.
I was surprised while working on the D201GLY just how hot I found the PSU and case. I'm going to try another small case I have here, but the D201GLY2 should be nice and cool, no? I won't buy soon but instead will wait for reports from other early buyers.

its TDP is 8 watts lower... but it has no fan..

I am thinking of buying one with google checkout once buy.com finally gets them in stock.

77 + 7.70 for me to ship. I just bought mine from the same place I did the d201gly, www.mini-box.com, for $82.76. As usual, will test it out. Perhaps SuSE 10.3 will natively recognize the video card.

Newegg no longer is carrying the D201GLY. I hope that to mean that they will soon replace it with its successor.

Edit: However, I cannot at this time focus on this issue when AMD is about to release their next generation of processors. I can hardly wait, if just for the new articles to read and the comments and insults flying this way and that. It's all just good theater.
