D2OL is a memory hog?

I am trying out the D2OL client on a couple machines. It is pretty (graphics) and it definitely seems interesting. Plus, it was a fairly painless install, which is always welcome.

However ... I had no idea D2OL was such a memory hog. Between the Java virtual machine and the client itself, it's chewing up about 99MB of memory on my Windows XP machine! I realize that Java is no wunderkind at memory efficiency, but still, I was rather surprised by this. D2OL is definitely not going to run well on old stripped crack rack nodes. Plus, if you have limited memory on your machine, it'll be starving for more when you try to run D2OL in the background while something else (like a memory hungry game) is running.

Maybe I'm missing something on the client that can lower memory usage. For now, I'll keep it running as a test, but it is doubtful many of my nodes will be moving to it simply because of memory requirements.

Yes ! It need at least 192 Mb on the computer to run without too much swapping. :Q

I've tried it on a Duron 1200 with 128 Mb and it's not good at all ! The children couldn't neither play nor watch video on the machine... :Q :Q

yes...it is quite the memory hog...a well publicized downfall of the client. But according to their forums...they need to use the memory for all of the computing it is doing and they have not been successful at stripping it down, it just wouldn't give the results they need.

Oh well...thanks for trying it JHutch, hope you keep a machine running it.

I'll keep a couple machines running it. I have some machines with large amount of memory (512MB and up) that shouldn't have trouble for the most part. But with the reports of rampant cheating in SETI, I was fishing for a replacement contest if that doesn't pan out well with the S@H folks. I really miss DNet's miniscule memory footprint ... but I just don't see the point of RC5-72 at this point and OGR is still broken.

I really think they can shrink it down. Kill java and use something else for gosh sakes!

The old client only used 50MB of memory. What happened?

as far as the new client goes, one of the mods over at their forums almost flat out said he doesn't believe it that it is taking up more memory when it was posted there by several people.

In his defense, he did cut and paste screen shots showing that it is still only using 50 or 60 meg ram on his system which only had 96 meg of ram. But I guess it only takes whatever is there to take. If there is more available, I am sure the client eats it up

I wonder if he would be interisted in a screen shot from this machine running the old client with only 50MB of memory and the new one taking up 100MB?

(I have two install directories, one old and one new)

Well I have 256mb ram and every game plays just as well as before. I see no difference well at least compared to other DC projects.

I have found it to be a very big memory hog! I tried it on a box with 64 MB of RAM and the box was not useable! It would never complete a conformer, it discard it and grabbed another one. Then I stuck it on a system with 128MB of RAM and a small HD used just for paging. It filled up the HD in a matter of seconds! :Q

I am running it successfully on systems with 256MB of RAM. I think one of the systems has 128MB of RAM and a large HD, but it is a dedicated cruncher.

I think calling it a memory hog is too nice to it. It's more like a memory thief.

App............... Mem Usage .... VM Size
D2OL.exe ................... 0K ........ 240K
javaw.exe ......... 10,152K ... 10,656K
DockWin.exe .... 87,328K . 175,096K

Total physical memory is 97,480K (95.2MB). The VM size is a whopping 185,992K (181.6MB). :Q That is just ridiculous. This is on my own system that I normally use and it only has 256MB RAM. I've got 13MB free right now.

Edit: just checked the other system that it's running on and the physical memory usage on that is 111.4MB out of 192MB total! :Q VM size is slightly (0.2MB) smaller.

Just to add some stats for memory comparisons:

D2OL.exe 796 K
javaw.exe 13,724 K

Not bad so far

DockWin.exe 87,324 K :Q

Good thing this machine has a gig of ram!

I'll check the two at home out and edit this when I get them.

It's killing my WinXP machine. Right now 50MB free of 256MB. Now try running Battlefield 1942.

LOL

I have it running on 2 amd boxes that are around 500 mhz, both with 128 mb ram. Neither machine is usable for anything but D2OL. Good thing I don't need them for anything else.

Oh dear, and I was going to run this on a dual celery with only 128Mb of ram... :-s I can't see it having two instances of this beast!

Hmm the Mac client only uses 33MB of memory! Anyone wanna look up what the Linux client uses? I was running it on only 96MB and it was doing great... I think this may just be the windows client! Even more encintive to move to Linux. (or buy a mac. )
