Yes I did!

Would a faster rig help? As long as it's for the community, XS can do some good things for ya! We would love to help in any way we can!

.:EDIT:. What are you running the stats on atm?

Stats are running on a dual XP1800 with 3x 256Mb ECC and 4x 9g 10k Ultra3 SCSI drives in a RAID 5 array. Apache 1.something, PHP5 & mySQL 4.something

Could you put a Dual Xeon rig overclocked to 3.0 or 3.2 to good use?

I'll see what I can do.

Does your RAID run off of the mobo or an add in card?

RAID is running off a Compaq RAID card... don't remember the mobo model offhand.

I'm tapped out as far as upgrading that server is concerned... I've got a dual 1900+ that will replace the dual 1800+ once I have it configured... aside from the CPU upgrade, I'm looking at a set of 18g drives to run in the new box.

Well what I'm thinking is getting a rig to you for the stats... minus the SCSI and RAID card... and anything else you can still use.

So Mobo, CPUs, coolers, and ram... setup a donation if i can and I'll build it.

What do you think?

2 Xeons running at 3.2GHz would stomp those amds

That's how the current server got built... mostly donations from the DC community The 'backup' server was assembled on my own dime (well... lots of dimes! ) I wouldn't say no if you could swing it... I enjoy serving the DC community as I do and it's a learning experience for me at the same time!

Would you put it to use for the stats and try and expand on them? If so I don't think that I would have much trouble raising the funds... I would just ask that you put it to good use on the stats... And maybe put a little "Server Hardware supplied by XtremeSystems.org" on the page if you want.

If you're 100% serious about it I'll get the ball rolling.

It would absolutely be the stats server... and I certainly wouldn't have a problem acknowledging generous donations... in retrospect, I am remiss on the current server in not acknowledging the contributions of literally dozens of people, not only monetary, but also in hardware. So I would have not problem giving recognition where recognition is due.

D2OL was the first project I did stats for... FaD is the latest... I was planning on porting many of the new stats pages found in the FaD pages to the 'older' stats pages... lots of people have made lots of great suggestions to improve the look, content and experience. For the most part, the database behind each set of stats is pretty much the same making porting the pages... well, not easy, but easier!

Awesome! I'll get something going in the admin section first @ XS. Can our convo about this be split off into it's own thread so we don't totally thrash it?

We are WELL on our way!

Freecableguy from our XtremeSystems D2OL team has donated the key parts. The Dual LV (Low voltage) 1.6GHz Xeons D1 stepping. These chips are getting by nature rare and are getting harder and harder to find... not to mention more expensive as demand is so high.

When I get these chips I'll be able to push them up to 3.0GHz easily! It will run anything you can toss at it at full load and not even flinch!

I'm really proud of how the team is pulling together on this one! I've got the chips and almost 1/2 the $$ required to build your rig.

We are XTREME!

Wow! That's amazing! I imagine my DDR 2100 ECC isn't going to run on the system you plan on putting those chips into, will it? I don't know much about Xeons, nevermind OCed Xeons... what kind of ram am I going to need for this rig?

Thanks!

None It will be provided.

1GB of TwinMOS Speed Premium BH-5 NON-ECC (Is 1GB enough?)

It will be running at ~220MHz with 2-2-2-5... Depending on how I end up tweaking it.

The board will be modded to enable the OC and to enable the mem to run super tight timings.

Gotta stop saying it, but WOW! Thank you! I'm currently running 3x 256... 1G should be more than adequate! Things seem to be moving fast... I'd better take another look at those 18g SCSI drives! Got the new RAID card earlier this week, and just freed up a decent vidcard. Guess I should find another rackmount case too... I've got a nice Antec (Chieftec actually) tower, but I don't think there's enough drive space and adequate airflow... I got a nice SGI 4U case for the current server

XS Rodzilla, this is awsome. Thanks. It is nice to see the whole community jump in on something like this.

I've got almost an exact duplicate of that made by Chieftech... just not a windowed side panel, but there is a 80mm (I think) fan on the side panel And it's burgandy! Has the same 4 fan holders.

I wasn't sure how many drives to get yet... there's a guy here with 60+ 18g drives in trays... not coolers... just trays. I was thinking of 4 or 5... maybe 6 so that I could have the boot drive on a RAID 0 array and the remaining data drives (minimum 3) on a RAID 5 array

I'll be running Win2K Server on it... that's the only server grade software I have, and I'm not adept enough at Linux to attempt configuring a Linux server...

Here's what the current server looks like:

http://www.softwaredistillery.com/server/server_pictures.html

I like the case alot... good airflow over the drives (with the added fans! ) and very spacious.

Nah... I don't need the boot partition on its own array... 4-5 drives should be fine
