I gave my dad my MSI mobo, it is the nForce 2 or3 ultra. He does plan on OC'ing, I told him to go after the 144 opt. he has pretty good memory, 2gb (2 x 1gb) DDR (dont remember the name but it starts with a "C").

AMD Opt. 144 (little more then $150 but I can help him out with that)
AMD 3000+
AMD 3200+
AMD 3500+
AMD 3800+
And would the Venice be the pne to go after?

Thank you.

Its nForce3, cause NF2 was an AthlonXP board. I'd get the best $/ghz ratio proc, which seems to be either a 3500 or 3800.

I'm just hoping S939 doesn't try up super quick since the manufacturing was stopped the beginning of July from the last news update I read. I would prefer to keep my current system for a little while longer before I go to Conroe.

Wait till the 24th of July... Price drops are like half of what they are now...

Then throw in an X2 3800+... make sure the mobo has a new bios to support the X2 tho since it is nForce3

Do y'all think the opt. will drop in price.

We will wait for the price drop and get one then.

Thanks for the link and help.

I would get a SD 3700+, they overclock like crazy, have the 1mb l2 cache and can be had cheap. You can find used ones on ebay for just over $100 or new for under $200.

I've been using one in my 939 rig for over a year o/c'd to 2.8ghz and it is plenty fast. Unless you do a lot of encoding, or other multithreaded aps the 3700+ is as fast or faster than an o/c'd X2

The mobo is a MSI Neo2 Plat. nForce Ultra 3. I am not sure if it will support an X2, i will check that out. Maybe there is an Modded Bios or something.

He will have around $100 to $150 to spend, so we will see this weekend!

Thank you guys.

The Neo 2 handles dual-core chips fine with BIOS 1.9 or later. I am running a dual-core Opteron in mine just fine. Make sure you flash it to a current BIOS before you put a dual-core chip in.

nForce2 is Socket A and has nothing to do with s939.

Anyways, I have seen quite a few s939 NF3 mobo's work perfectly fine with the x2's.

I didn't see a official bios release that enabled dual core support on their site. If a DualCore chip doesn't work in it, I would get a 3800+ Single core. They are already in the $140ish range and is a very strong single core cpu.

I researched and that board will support the X2 with the right BIOS. Which is already on there....

I am going to talk to him tonihgt and see what he wants to do, he stated yesterday he has been researching the single core and dual core and found out there is not much of a different when it comes to gaming, he is a gamer...:Q.....at his old age and still playing games, no offense! I just bought him the whole collections of Battlefield 2 and he is on it more then I am and his current pc is an locked XP 3200 (2.2 GHz or something like that). we sometimes play on the same map...

So this price cut, will it take effect nationwide, in store and e store?

Nationwide. Dunno about retail. Fry's might have price cuts if s939 had not already been discontinued but their combo prices are cheap to begin with. Other than that, stick to online prices.

Ok guys which one for me and my dad:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400
or
AMD Opteron 165 Dual-Core

There about the same price, same amount of cache in L1 and L2.

We both play games and usually run programs in the background.

Thank you.

If you're planning to OC, then I suggest the Opteron 165.

Go with the X2 3800+. It's a steal for the price.

And don't let anyone BS you about how it isn't any good for gaming. It'll handle the task admirably.

Yeah, the 3800+ OCs fine. Any theoretical difference in potential is going to be 100-200Mhz at best.

hit ebay and look for either a 144 or a X2 3800+ if you desire dual core.
