Damaged the CPU ?

Well for my first build I decided to go with an ASUS a8n-sli a 3500+ a thermaltake 480w psu
I set it all up correctly (or at least so I thought) and when I couldn't get it to POST or make any sort of sounds as to what was wrong
I took off the CPU and not knowing I had to whipe off the thermal junk before putting it back well I did this numerous times untill just reading the little book thoroughly and it says you should not do that.
Now should the motherboard POST or beep without a working cpu?
Is the cpu damaged and/or the motherboard?
I'm just curious to what I should RMA First.
The motherboard has never POSTed or beeped so I figured it was that
But now I think it could be both after reading the AMD papers.
As of right now I have a $750 paperweight and im kicking myself for not just buying some crappy prebuilt, at least it would be up and running.

this is one of those situations, where you REALLY need to have some basic understanding of what you're doing BEFORE you start messing with stuff. sorry to hear about your paperweight.

the board wont do anything without a cpu, get some thermal compound and try the cpu in the board, then reply back what has happened

I guess I'll buy some thermal compound, man it's 10 bucks?
And shouldn't my mobo beep at me even without a processor?

If you have a friend that is more experienced than you with computers, have him go thru the complete install with you. Its sounds like you are not quite ready for this, no offence meant. You have a couple of nice pieces of equipment and I don't want to see you screw it up. BTW what is 10 dollars when you have spent 750 on the other stuff?

YEA i know 10 bucks is nothing but I have my doubts that it's the processor and I've heard that the mobo should say cpu not found or whatever even without a cpu installed, I'm doing everything right, the only reason I didn't read the cpu manual clearly is because I figured I'd only need to install it once...
It is my first build and I did expect some problems, I just wish HL2 wasn't staring me in the face

That does suck when you have a killer setup and a killer game, but cant quite play it yet. What video card did you go with?

I didn't buy one (good thing) my friend did let me use his asus 6600gt but other than that I was going to order one after I got the system up and running.
Maybe if I beg newegg they'll let me return everything at no cost for me

is the video card you have agp or pci-e?

i know it sounds silly but we gotta cover all the ground.

It's PCIE But ive also tried with a geforce fx 5200 pci, anyway I'm leaning towards a bad board
I might take the CPU to a shop and see if that's bad otherwise
I'll get some thermal, RMA the board and see if that makes a difference
I don't think the vid card is the problem considering I can't hear the asus lady telling me what's wrong with my setup.
