2 weeks ago, 256mb DDR PC2100 from Crucial was $63.

The price is now $76.

Better grab some sticks before they go over the $100 mark! :|

Hard to hate crucial for finally turning a dime. After all, they and infineon are responsible for the death of rambus as a would-be hegemonic power of the memory market

'sides, $70 for 256 megs of high-quality memory isn't the end of the world.

I know, it sucks. Totally complicated things with my rig upgrade, but still. I wouldn't damn Crucial for it. It was bound to happen. So anyway.

At least the CPU prices are going down... Kind of a balance in the end, you know?

I knew that I would be doing an upgrade this winter so I bought my RAM early. Got 2 sticks of Crucial PC2100 for about 69 shipped. Odd part is, I haven't got a M/B yet.

When was Rambus ever going to be this? All I remember is Rambus had DRAM liscences in some areas and were looking to get a certian percentage back from those makers and a percentage in the future.

However, now we can buy PC2700 RAM which wasn't even available when the Crucial and other PC2100 prices were low. Now you can buy PC2700 for the same price as Crucial rips off on their PC2100.

Boycott PC2100!

This is hardly Crucial's fault. World memory prices have been rising, so it was inevitable that prices at Crucial would rise too. The title of the thread ("Damn Crucial") has nothing to do with the contents ('memory prices are rising'). If anything the title of the thread would be better as "Damn Hynix" since they are the memory manufacturer that has been leading the price increases. Or perhaps another title could be "Does consolidation always lead to higher consumer prices?" since rumors of mergers have also led to price increases on the spot market.

Besides this, memory has been selling below manufacturing cost for well over 9 months according to most analysts. A situation where manufacturers are selling below their cost is never a good long-term event for consumers. Eventually either some part of the flow is compromised in the name of cost reduction, or the companies become so finanically weak that a wave of consolidation follows. We seem to be seeing the latter. At a guess, I think we will be seeing higher memory prices for some time to come.

What pm said.

The title "Damn Crucial" boldly proclaims the ignorance of the author of this thread, Comp625.

damn crucial isn't totally off. They have bull shipping, free 2nd day UPS for contenetal orders, but for Hawaii you have to pay $15 for 2nd day Fed Ex, it's practically the same damn thing!!! Some other sites have it the other way around!!! WTF??? Boycott all these bull sites!

Crucial does not set their memory prices they are based on the Market.

Also Crucial is still losing money for each module they sell.

I never blame Crucial If you dont remeber when PC2100 first came out everyone was charging 150+ for 256MB, Crucial came out with it for I think $70 and it drove the whole market down, dont blame crucial for higher prices, thank them for bringing them as low as they were.

It's all about the market, as stated above, supply/demand, costs etc.. It's not really Crucial's decision to hike up the prices like that, they HAVE to because of the economy.

Just to make everyone else feel better about themselves, ...

I purchased to 256MB PC2100 sticks from Crucial when they were first released (hoping that a wide variety of SMP Athlon boards would shortly follow. $103 each, free 2-day shipping, of course. And I didn't use the sticks until September.

COuld have savd $100 or more, but I don't think I would have gone any other way than Crucial.

It wasn't that long ago that PC100 sdram was selling at $1.00 a meg. $70.00 for 256mg of memory is still better than it was two years ago.
