For some strange reason, I'm not disappointed at all. UCLA was one of my top choices, but I'm not really that disappointed at all. I'm still waiting to here from Berkeley and UCSD, and I'm quite positive I can get into UCSD easily, dunno about Berkeley though. I guess UCLA has become extremely competitive this year because I had a 3.7 GPA, 1410 SAT I, 700/700/700 SAT II scores. Hopefully I'll squeeze through into Berkeley, but if not I heard UCSD has a pretty darn good CS program.

UPDATE: Just checked UCSD's website, and i got in. So looks like Berkeley is the last school I'll hear from. So far i have gotten into USC, UCR, UCD, UCSD, UCI, UCSC, and UCSB. I'm feelin pretty happy right now .

i prefer the atmosphere at UCSD more. if you were applying to L&S you'd have been in UCLA for sure. engineering is tougher unfortunately

wait a minute, under my first choice major i put UNDECLARED but in the second choice i put down CS engineering. Are you saying that if I put undeclared on both majors i would have gotten in? OMG, if this is true I am going to shoot myself in the foot!!!!

Of course the major matters...if you had applied to Cal's college of Natural Resources, you would have 0 problem getting in...

I had a 4.2, 1420 SAT, 700s for SATIIs, a lot of extra curriculars, and was lucky enough to get into the Mechanical Enginnering program. Did you have any extra curriculars? I know a lot of people with good GPAs and SAT scores but weren't really involved and they didn't get in either.

so your saying if you applied to lets say a CS major, and didn't get into that major, you are DENIED completely from the university. They wouldn't offer u admission as an undeclared student?

Are these schools getting more difficult to get into? I applied in '96 and got into Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD with lower SAT scores than you.

They are becoming fiercely competetive nowadays. UCLA has 4200 spots and got over 43000 applicants. You do the math.

I don't know if that second major hurt you. I was under the impression you could only apply to one of the schools rather than to L&S and Engineering at the same time. They might have assumed that your undeclared was "undeclared but something in the engineering school" because of your second major. If you want to go to UCLA, I think you should appeal the decision and explain what happened. With your stats it's definitely worth a shot.

3-4 years ago you would have gotten in easily but with todays inflated scores, you're slightly below the norm for the CS engineering major. Probably would have been better off applying to Life Sciences then transfering to Engineering. Either way, I would advise against coming to UCLA now for a couple reasons. Overcrowding is becoming a very serious issue. UCLA first years will end up in a very small triple 10x15 or a 6 person study lounge, parking is not guaranteed and is always gone by 830am. You're guaranteed dorm housing the first 2 years only. 3rd/4th years are going to be a problem with housing prices in westwood. My 2bed/2bath ~800ft apart 10min from campus was $2100 my third year, $2400 this year. Excessive demand is driving up prices every year. Atnother common dormcomplaint, my first year in the dorms I was pulling 400k download/ 30 ping but now STC has really choked the dorm bandwidth. No real problems on the academic side, 300-400 person classes aren't that bad and will generally shrink to 100 person classes in the later years. I've enjoyed my time at UCLA but if I personally wouldn't recommend appealing to come here given the current situation. Good luck with Cal!

I am in CS and engineering at UCLA. I'll tell you this; ALL CS professors suck. They got the credentials, but they have NO clue how to teach. Referring to the other post, all CS classes are around 75 people (not 300-400 like someone said). check out www.uclaprofessors.com, its pretty accurate.

Actually, Nachenberg is really good for first years. He's only going to teach CS31 1st quarter next year though (take the 4-6 lecture). He actually lectures well, gives you his lecture note prinouts during class for free, and if you participate, you can win prizes (like free movie tickets). He's a great professor. You can read his reviews of uclaprofessors.com also...
