You need a hollow needle to do it...I heard someone recommending a pencil once (the automatic ones) for 0.5 or 0.7 mm. Put it over the pin and bend...

Cool thanks alot. Bending them back inplace wont break the pins? or will they?

If you bend the pin enough times it will break, it's called metal fatigue. Like if you have a paper clip and bend it backwards and forwards, in the end it will break.

The pin should be fine if you simply bend it back without messing around.

cool thanks. heres a picture of it http://www.imagedump.com/index.cgi?pick=get&tp=387196

Ouch... good luck with that, you're going to be very hard pressed to get all of them straight again. It's tough when you have a handful, but 40+ is going to be a royal pain.

dang people are tearing up their optys right and left.

AMD should harden the pins

Or do BGA like 775 Intels.

It's actually LGA and yes they are going to eventually move to that platform with socket F.

My goodness! How'd you manage to get pins bent on 3 out 4 sides? Looks like it landed on one side and rolled on the other 2 before it stopped. Good luck on getting em bent back!

Those look repairable to me!

Just be careful to only bend them once and not to rock them back and forth. I would use a big needle (like one used on a sewing machine?) and carefully bend them all at once.

Just get a magnifying glass and TAKE YOUR TIME

I feel your pain :brokenheart: OPTY 165 :brokenheart:

Wow, that sucks man, lol.

I dropped mine last week when I was going to remove the IHS. Once it fell, i decided on not even bothering taking it off, because my luck wasn't looking so good. Luckly, I didn't bend anything. But my heart was pumping hard before I seen the screen post up.

These new chips are SO HEAVY. A socket A chip wouldn't bend so much if it were dropped .

You can definately fix it. If you are very dextrous, fix it yourself, if not, get someone that you know is good with very small things like that. Remember that it is very much precision work. The key is to get everything as straight as you can, look at it from different angles to confirm, try it in the socket GENTLY.

Then rinse and repeat.

Good luck bud! If it doesn't work out, I call dibs on the dead opty .

So many stories of dropped CPUs and bent pins. I would think people wouldn't mess around with their CPUs, or hold them at heights where if they are dropped, the pins wouldn't bend...

Hah, seriously. The pins on Socket A CPUs are actually thicker so that's why they don't bend so easily. Remember that AMD is cramming twice the amount of pins to roughly the same area so the pins are very thin and fragile. I normally dont unpackage my CPUs until I'm ready to slip them into the socket. I suppose it's nice to look at your brand new dual-core CPU as soon as you receive it but having a bit of patience can save you lots of trouble.

That?s correct.

Socket 939 AMD?s use a PGA interface (Pin Grid Array) or more accurately for s939, mPGA (micro Pin grid Array). PGA (non micro) would have been used on say Socket A with the larger thicker pins.

BGA stands for (Ball Grid Array) much like the interface for GPU?s and chipsets. Basically the BGA interface is for chips that are not intended to be removable but permanently soldered on to the PCB.

I forget what LGA (L? Grid Array) standards for but basically it is a pinless chip that has pads instead, and the pins (or so to speak) are on the socket itself. For example Intel?s socket 775.

What'd your dad do to fix them?

I personally used a deck of playing cards and stacked the cards in between the pins to find the right combinations etc.

Then I pushed it with slight force into an old motherboard to get them straight. Worked OK.

Someone people used a pen cartridge on the pins. But when you have 40+ .

i still dont get how people manage to bend pins on their cpus, i have never bent a single one, u have to be really rough with it to bend the pins.

That would be "Land Grid Array".

not hard if the cpu gets pulled out of the socket by AS5 and HS..I had one pin get bent(sort a slight tilt) I just gently moved it back and cpu is fine
