-24C feels like -35. Back to the cold here too. Had to boost the car to get it going. I really need to get a new battery, I don't think mine is holding a charge very well anymore. The car is a 2004 and it's probably the original battery so it's due.

A 118-year-old record was shattered in Central Park in New York, where it was 4 degrees, the coldest reading on the books for Jan. 7 and the coldest at any time since January 2004.

I'll take the cold/snow over the earthquakes, tornados and hurricanes.

It's up to 0F here! It was -14F when I got into my car this morning. Sadly, I forgot my lunch card at home and there is no way I'm going outside unless I have to. Looks like I'm skipping lunch today. =(

Sounds like upper midwest somewhere. It was -14F this morning near my old man's house on the Lake Michigan shore east of Chicago. Believe me, 3F is bloody cold enough for us denizens of the mid-atlantic .

I don't understand how you can live somewhere that's it's so cold you can't even be outside. Do you just stay inside all winter?

Usually there's at least some outside time - have to get into cars and whatnot. We just stick to indoor places so we can minimize how much time we spend outside.

So yeah, we don't get the nice weather sunny outdoors where we can do outdoorsy things all the time. And many people still find fun things to do outside when it's only reasonably cold, as in, dress in layers to stay warm but not really facing a frostbite threat.

Winter for us is dominated by either indoor sporting events (arenas or even something like bowling), drinking establishments, other locations that are buildings...
hmm, we seem to do everything in winter that most people continue to do even when it's summer... just, we don't do anything that's warm-weather-only and entirely outside, like swimming, frolicking and sunbathing in the park (limited frolicking when cold, polar bear club members don't count for either), amphitheater concerts, walking around town without wearing and holding onto a billion layers of clothing (we add the layers but still do that downtown).

I mean, it's not like we literally stay inside all winter.
This is just terrible because for almost everyone here, the temperatures are depressingly low, dangerously low, and most of us have never or only rarely experienced such temperatures - usually, every single night is safe during an Ohio winter. These are rare historic lows - most developed parts of Canada don't get this low THAT often. And temporarily holing up ain't so bad - sorta like a hurricane.
Worse, the roads are for shit for many of us too... so going nowhere is partly out of necessity, or not risking it.
Roads were still so icy here, it's basically illegal to be driving around without a very good reason and I do believe you can be given a citation.

Ohio has something called Snow Emergencies, which are given up to 3 levels on a mostly county-by-county basis (some smaller cities/towns/villages as well).
Level 3: "All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest."

Fine but so boring.

Snow is awesome when we get it a few times a year. And no, driving [hours] to find snow is not the same.

Times like this I'm not jealous of 70s weather. I'm jealous of the people actually getting snowfall, because bitter chill with no snow is pointless.

The deep freeze might actually end. 35 degrees tomorrow and Wednesday. The first above freezing temps since December 5th.

There's a possibility of getting enough snow tonight for our city/region to break an all-time record for amount of snow in an entire season.

We're also forecast to get a brief and mild melt in a few days, and along with that, the potential for over an inch in rain. Local flooding is probably going to be horrendous.

I think we, as in the U.S. throughout the Great Lakes, Ohio River Valley, and Mississippi River regions, are in store for record flooding through Spring or beyond.

Hopefully it doesn't ruin planting season for the farmers, but I'm not holding my breath for a strong yield outlook this year.
Hopefully I'm wrong, but given how stubborn the jet stream is this winter, or how successfully it has held onto it's unusual pattern, it may be an indication that seasonal weather patterns are in for some fairly permanent changes, meaning, next winter might not be terribly far off the mark from this winter, and other seasons could be in for some different outlooks. Hopefully my armchair climatology couldn't be further from the truth, but... it's been in the making for awhile now, eventually we've got to see some drastic changes to the global weather patterns. So far everything has been mostly similar/normal but with wilder random swings producing severe weather in a scattered manner, but the very idea of climate change tends to mean climate patterns change to a new "normal" (random fluctuations always occur, but where's the baseline? That's the yearly climate we know and generally account for).

Warming up quite a lot here, and still not much snow in the forecast. We don't have much snow on the ground still, maybe a few feet at most, mostly from December.

Nice break from the cold.

Nice break from the cold, but hopefully it stays below 0 though, things get really messy when snow starts to melt. The roads have a nice slick snow covering on them now which makes them less hard on the car.

we had a nice thaw this weekend, now we are getting reamed again. Should make for a nice ice/snow/slush combo on the way home. Of its not Southern Ice, so I'll be ok.

That is how it was here. It was so nice this weekend and today we are expecting around 8 inches. Thankfully, we don't have that Southern ice, or I'd be afraid to go outside.

I would walk in 10 ft of snow, 20 mph winds, and it was so cold my hands and face would start to go numb in seconds. All I had on were shorts and a white t-shirt.

You kids are punks!

We got beautiful weather here in IL. It was a bit brisk this morning, I believe the low was around -6f. But, now it's creeping upwards and we might even see double digits. It's pretty much spring now!

Weather has been all over the place here. We got a bit of snow the other day, but still not much, only like an inch. Now it's -22 with a windchill warning. -35 with windchill.

The other day it was actually 0. Snow was melting like crazy. Some streets were even partially down to the pavement in some spots.
