My Ricoh RDC-6000 digital camera broke yesterday and I'm looking for recommendation on good camera under $500 to replace this one.

In case you're interested in what was wrong with it, it was having some difficulty focusing, then all the sudden it started giving errors and it wouldn't work anymore. All it does now is make lots of clicking noise then display an error.

This is what I'd like it to have:

zoom

good close up shot

isn't huge in size

at least 2Mega Pixels

use smartmedia(I already have five or so SmartMedia and a SmartMedia reader and my father's computer has SmartMedia reader also and I'd rather stick with it)

connects to PC by USB

good night shot performance would be nice

Have you even made a half-hearted effort to fix it? Take the battery(s) out for five minutes and put them back in. If that doesn't work, perhaps a new battery. Try tapping it or shaking it a little bit. If all that fails, why don't you pay to have it repaired? How and when did they come to acquire that particular one in the first place?

<< anyone??? >>

13-minute bump deserves a snide remark:
Is that a crappy <$10k digital camera that you just broke?

I kill me sometimes.

Yeah I tried those. Took out the battery for a few min, swapped it with freshly charged set of battery(I have three sets of batteries, this thing drains battery fast) and even followed through factory default loading procedure in the manual.

I'm not really up for getting it fixed, because I have the feeling it will cost close to buying a new one. RDC-6000 can be had for about $200 new and probably much less used. Repair like this usually involves labor starting at $75 + $n/hr and parts cost +shipping and I wouldn't be surprised if it adds up to $150 or more. If I'm getting a new one, I'd like to get a more recent better one though. Why would I want to get the same one?

I've been eyeing the sexy Fujitsu 2600 but I don't have the $ for it...

AND I don't know if it's SM or CF storage

when did you get it, its probably still under warranty...

check out the fuji 2800z 6x optical zoom, uses smart media can be found for ~300...or the olympus 2100z...10x optical, uses SM ~500

whatever you get (i recommend kodak, nikon or olympus personally) get something that has a decently quick focus time. My toshiba, while it takes good looking pics, takes like 3-4 secs to focus....it's damn slow and annoying at zoos, or anyplace where stuff is going on. Slow focus == no candid shots

i would suggest looking at Casio Digital cameras. My friend has teh 3.3 mega pixel with an IBM microdrive. Its awesome for its feature set and its photo quality.

casio makes decent cameras, i have a qv2000. but it is compact flash... microdrive is good for me, but since you want smartmedia, i guess that might not be so good for you.

seriously though, get your parents to pay the 500, and chip in like 200-600 of your own money and get a really nice one. one with lots of zoom and at least 3 megapixels. seriously, if you use it with any regularity, i think it is worth the money, 'specially since it sounds like you guys are kinda well off.

but i think most of the better ones are using compact flash (so they can use microdrive.. okay cf 2, but anyways...)

The Canon G2 is a pimp camera, takes very sharp and clear pictures. It has 4MP and supports the IBM microdrives and compact flash. It is fairly popular, and can be had for around $550 or so using those amex pricematch deals.

And here I am wondering how I'm going to buy books and stretch my scholarships until September. Poor, poor baby.

I just got the S110, it is so sweet. it's very small, i keep it on me all the time now to take random pictures. But it takes CF instead of SM.

Ok, but that doesn't help me with my question.

I love my Olympus C-700UZ....2.1mp, 10x optical zoom, 27x digital. It was $444 after tax in August. (PM with O-max)

What's wrong with having parents pay for things? If some of our parents can afford a lot, it doesn't make us lesser people.
