damn newspaper canceling policy

so some handicapped kid came to my door and asked me to "donate" for subscription to this newspaper (I am ~50 miles away from SF). I normally don't even read paper or watch the news even. Out of sympathy of my heart to the kid, I agreed to a 1/2 year subscription pay in advance.

now that 1/2 year has gone by, and they are asking me to renew, I simply ignored the renewal notice. Now I got a notice telling me that my subscription is canceled due to non-payment, and I need to pay otherwise collection action will be taken against me. WTF!?!?!?!?

for the 1/2 year the paper has gone straight from the outside of my door to trash. is this what i deserve for being nice?

the newspaper is "San Francisco Chronicle"

A bank or employer has a wealth of information.

If you don't cancel, you end up having to pay. Just like any porn site that offers a 3 day trial.

When you get a collection notice, just send it back with Cancel on it. I've gotten many of those for magazine subscriptions, after mailing it back with cancel on the bill, I've never heard back from any of them.

the SF Chronicle are notorious crooks. they are SO bad. i have heard of them just randomly signing people up for subscriptions and then billing them. and they telemarket like crazy, at all hours. you can't blame them for needing to be slimeballs to sell that crappy paper, though. San Jose Mercury News FTW!
