I wrecked two tires and possibly the rims driving on the FDR.

Fortunately, I bought tire insurance when I got my car for $800/5yrs. I guess it's already paid for itself.

Dealership told me they are covered under insurance and to bring the car in. Good thing because they are run flats that go for around $300 each. They are only 2 months old too.

God I hate the FDR... if you live around the city, that tire insurance was definitely a good buy.

But watch the potholes that you know are there!

Yeah, I know where a lot of them are but sometimes you are trailing behind a big car or SUV and have no time to react when a pothole comes out of nowhere. Also, sometimes a small looking one ends up giving you a big jolt. I can't imagine how much damage I am doing to my suspension by hitting these potholes.

That totally blows, man. This exact problem is what drove me to buy a SUV years back. I got tired of bending the rims (just the plain stock rims, mind you) on my Accord. You can't win though. With a car you're always buying rims. With a SUV you're always buying gas. Glad to hear you had tire/wheel insurance.

Can't see any damage in front photo. Rear photo shows damage to tire and that minor abrasion on the rim can be polished out, unless the rim has a crack we can't see. I had a similar incident on the FDR north going thru the 96th st underpass. Hit something on the road, both right side tires went down. Had to use the spare and buy a temp, wrong size tire for the other just to get home. But my rims were ok, just lost 2 tires.

Damn that sucks. I think I hit something near the Queensborough bridge exit in the left lane. I'm not positive though.

These low profile tires really sustain a lot damage. I never had a problem with my G35. In fact, whenever I hit a pothole in my old G35, I never got the jarring hit that I do in my new car. I guess it's because the tire profile is a bit larger.

FDR and what? I've never seen bad roads around NYC (compared to Michigan), sans the metal slabs.

That being said, my CLK ate through rear tires in 8K miles driving around NYC, those slabs apparently just kill tires.

The jarring and every little bump you feel is from the runflats. Personally I would get rid of them (and I have) but since you have the insurance that will always pay for replacements... may as well keep them. BUT watch out for when you take a road trip and get stuck with needing a replacement and nowhere close will sell that particular RFT model... that's when you're in trouble. I've heard more and more will patch the RFTs but they're not supposed to because of liability. Curious - did yours come with a regular spare?

Queens is the fricken worst with potholes. Queens is the worst with street names and finding anything too... I think I hate Queens more than the FDR. Yup, I've made up my mind.

That's the problem. The 3 series does not come with a spare tire or even room to put a spare in the trunk without taking half of it up. I have non-RFT snow tires but I'm going to hold off on buying non RFT summer tires until I wear these out. My old Honda Prelude SH used to bottom out just like my 3 but my G35 Sport never had that problem and it had 18" rims too. When I look at pictures of the G35 tires, I realize that the profile is about 2x as wide as my RFTs.

Jersey is way worse when it comes to street signs, those fuckers don't even market tpike onramps to get to Staten island... I've gotten lost there so many times.

Those low profile tires aren't doing you any good with the potholes. You don't need a truck, just a car with higher profile tires. Keep them inflated sufficiently and you shouldn't have a problem. Cars like yours (looks like a BMW) just aren't built for rough roads.

Queens is not bad finding your way around. Except in Astoria & Long Island City where you will find the same Number on Roads, Streets and Avenues in some spots ... Try telling someone to go to 38th Ave and they end up on 38th St or 38th Rd .. that is a crazy system ... FYI .. I grew up in Rego Park, Queens .. As to the post about New Jersey roads, I agree. Road signage is terrible. You get on a road and you can go for many blocks, before seeing a sign that says you still on the same road.

Are those 225 45/18s? I have 225 45/17s so they're similar. They look great, but I don't like how little rubber there is between the rim and the road. I'm thinking of stepping up to 225 50/17 when these tires wear out but I need to find out if the speedometer can be recalibrated easily and if they'll fit without rubbing.

It was my wedding day and before we got to the place where our limo started I had to go pick up the videographer in Queens... he's somewhere down Woodhaven near Queens Center and I got so frustrated finding his street... we were almost late to start that day. Avenue, street, road... it made absolutely no sense. Numerous other situations finding friends' houses and it wasn't just LIC or Astoria... many areas are like that. I grew up in Jamaica and never noticed back then. GPS is a must.

BTW, it looks like my 20s are just as low profile. I drive with extreme caution, but I also have a spare.

They are the 18" that come with the sport package. They are staggered. I forget what size they are.

I agree about the low profiles looking good but it comes at such a huge cost living in a city with terrible potholes.

This is a great idea as they are responsible. They have a certain amount of time to fix them though, so you should call 311 and see if it's been reported. If they say that it has, get the reported date. If it's been a while, then they should pay.

Holy crap. Was that between 71st and 59th? I hit a pothole in the middle lane and it wrecked my front tire -- I have 2 bubbles within a few inches of each other.

I was planning to replace it sometime later this month. It also scratched the hell out of my rim. Where did you go to get your tires/warranty? I wanted to replace all 4 of my tires with the rubber bands like you have.

I tried getting the city to pay for my tires when I blew out 3 tires in one shot here. I took pictures and received a letter about 4 months later saying that I had to get a police and insurance report before they could even consider looking at my case.
