damn. Verizon wireless isn't interested in wooing customers.

My biggest beef with verizon is that they don't allow you to have a smartphone with basic phone service.

I don't want their internet service but would like my smartphone to have a phone feature > eliminating a need for my wife to have 2 devices (which she can live with hehe)

Honestly, if the iPod had hardware GPS, I would go back to a flip phone right away.

well that's how they get you to pay. I would love it if I could just have the wifi capabilities of the GNex for $0 additional for 0 LTE data. Instead I'm paying like $25/mo. for unlimited data for which I barely use 2GB. Thing is it costs the same to do it at PagePlus prepaid for 2GB ($55).

I'm thinking after this contract runs out in a year or so, I'm just going to do prepaid minutes and no data, and just use the wifi capabilities. Possible yes? I think since they're the same network they let you use the GNex.

I went to a Verizon store when my contract was up. I also got the feeling I wasn't important to them to get as a customer. They wouldn't offer me anything special. They are the biggest, so they don't need to cater to people it seems. My contract is up in 6 months, its very likely I am going to try Virgin Mobile.

Check out ting.com, before you go to VM. I'm using VM now, but will be switching to Ting for LTE - VM has WiMAX only, and only one 4G phone available.

I have 6 months left, so maybe they will have something else other than the HTC Evo 4g. Sprint should actually have LTE in my area by then.

I take it with a grain of salt, but the guy over at BB said they are suppose to have it done by the end of the year. Not sure if he meant the whole thing or just our area.

s4gru.com should give you news about your area.

and

sensorly.com should provide you user generated 3G/4G maps. (doesn't look like much Sprint LTE in OC but there is WIMAX)

for those who keep LTE on all the time, how often do you charge your phone? I hate being at the end of the night and I can't even watch Netflix on it without plugging in. Do you leave it plugged in at the office or something?

Do you actually switch LTE off like you claim? Do you use a widget or something? I just can't imagine switching it on and off all day long. I admit, I get horrible battery life though - 6 hours with a lot of use. 12-18 if I rarely use it (ie at work).

Operators are morons it's why they are in that position. You should try account retentions. I do this with cable each year. Last year I got attitude from the guy so I simply called back and next person was far more accommodating.

I am not a bandwidth hog by any means, but I'd like the peace of mind that if I do need the bandwidth, or I leave my phone streaming something overnight, I won't use up all my data or be overcharged for it.

Overage is $10/GB, so if you paid your $30 or whatever it is for 2GB, you'd have to use another 5GB (7GB total) to end up paying the same $80 you were spending on your 10GB plan.

Did you have some special grandfathered rate on the 10GB package? I just don't see why you'd rather pay an extra $50/month when you're averaging only 2 or 3GB of usage.

Right now only Las Vegas and Kansas City are completed.

The rest of the country is on-going work around the clock.

I honestly don't mind slower speeds. If it can get email and occasionally stream pandora, I'm good.

It will work perfectly fine on 2G (56K max) until your area is re-farmed to 1900 HSPA+.

There have been over a million people with iPhones on T-Mobile on the existing 2G GSM network since the iPhone came out and now people in Las Vegas and Kansas City are experiencing 4G HSPA+ High Speeds in those markets because they are already done.

Im at home all the time so it's not like I do it constantly. Maybe twice a day I'll need it and the widget brings me to the 4g checkbox so it's quick enough.

Not with Verizon no

But I think their child company does this and allows Smartphones with Phone Service only (no internet). Prepaid too.

Forgot the name of it though.

Page Plus is a Verizon MVNO. You can put smart phones on bare bones voice/text plans for around $13 a month. Problem is that you can not bring over LTE phones so you rule out high end/recent smart phones.

Ting and Straight Talk have current phones available to them.

I think battery conservation is a pretty good reason to stay on wifi when you can. I only have LTE on when I need it. Goes off as soon as I don't. Also it gets burning hot pretty quickly.

It probably depends a lot on area/signal strength. Around Los Angeles mine is excellent, S3 uses maybe 1% battery life per hour at worst when idle. WiFi doesn't make much difference, phone doesn't get hot using LTE either.

I'm working in a different area for a couple weeks. My company iPhone 4 is using 50%+ battery a day idle, searching for sprints shit 3g. Usually it uses less than 10% battery in a day.

I charge mine in the evening, and it's good to go all night (no charger in bedroom) and the next day, with fairly heavy use. (Verizon iPhone 5)

Haven't seen it below 20% yet.

I figured I am their ideal customer. I pay a ton every month, have a 10GB limit and use around 1-2GB a month at most.

So I call them up, threaten to cancel and see what they can do for me, and they said, nah nothing we can do. I was hoping they'd offer unlimited or free tethering or even unlimited text (I had a 1000 limit.)

Man, they must be making loads of money to not care about keeping one.
Needless to say, I cancelled.

Now to decide on what phone I want next (on Sprint, where I have an active account where I pay for my mom.)

Gettin close to 20 brah!!!

My wife has verizon, 2 year is up in March. Her Droid (2 i think) is HORRIBLE, always has issues and this is phone number #3 she is on, they've had to replace it 2 times under warranty.

She called them this week to find out what the early termination fee would be (about $117 if I remember correctly) because she wanted to switch back to AT&T.

Rep offered her, free phone upgrade right now for anything other than the iphone 5, free mobile to mobile regardless of network, unlimited data for $100. I kid you not.

The original was the best.
No Verizon bloatware.
No Motorola bloatware.
Hardware actually worked.

Right after that they started going downhill.
