Was about to delete a folder of files that I thought were corrupt, turns out the filename and foldername was to long.

You think windows would give you a friendly warning about exceding the limits.

It's a well known problem with windows. Just be glad you don't use '95 where there were occasions when you simply couldn't delete these folders. Ever.

Ah right... so a basic problem that hasn't been fixed even though one of the richest companies in the world with massive resources has had ten years and multiple releases of new operating systems to get it right. Yep... sounds about right. MS!

Consider a mac, maybe? Dunno... might not be for you. They aren't for everyone.

In Windows you can't have folder hierarchies that exceed 255 levels. So I've heard at least, I can't test it here.

Maybe if you weren't downloading warez, you wouldn't have this problem.

Some of the pr0n that I have contain REALLY long file names. I guess they just wanted it to show up during pr0n searches.

Yes........no. Regardless of what opinion someone may have of Microsoft, theft is theft. Using an illegal copy of Windows is no different than xeroxing a book.

To you and all that followed you, it is NOT warez. They are official downloads from Microsoft. I added the cd-key to the folder and filename because I always forget them and then I have to go and lookup the email that Microsoft sent. The cd-key was changed after I copied and pasted it.

You you tried moving it's parent folder (drag and drop) to the root of c: ? We've had problems on our network with long filenames/paths that you can't do anything with, but drag and drop to a lesser named folder helped loads.

The folder was on a different computer and then moved across a network which added a bunch of directories to it. I first thought it had corrupted on transfer. I really hate the "Documents and Settings" folder, I usually have it renamed to DAS just to shorten the name but I forgot to do that when installing last time.

2005 and Microsoft still hasn't fixed this problem. It would have been easy enough to give a warning when exceeding the limit.
