I've had a Verizon prepay plan for awhile now. Very nice because I rarely use my cell. Minimum to add is just $15/month. 25 cents to make a call, and 10 cents a minute. Text messages were 5 cents to send, and 2 cents to receive.

Today I get a text message alerting me that the NEW rates are 10 cents to send AND 10 cents to receive! Can you believe that? 2 cents all the way up to 10 to receive a freakin text? Stupid.

While I'm not aware of any hikes in my wireless service price I'm getting reamed on cable. I'll just blame the FCC to cover all the bases on this one.

Verizon hiked the price on text messages for us monthly customers to 10 cents/text about 4 months ago. I'm surprised you're only affected now.

So did they charge you a dime to read the message about the rate going up?

Aye, same happened to me. Verizon is starting to tick me off. I already ditched my landline with them for SunRocket because they tried screwing me with that, now they're starting to get under my skin on my cell service. They recently shut off my service because my auto-pay somehow overpaid them $50. Took me a few hours of frustrating calls with customer service to get them to fix it.

You're complaining because you agreed to a text messaging plan where you pay no monthly fee, but you pay 10 cents a message.... change the plan!

I pay $10 for 500 txt messages per month. That's 2 cents per text message. Why don't you do that?

You can change it online in your account with "Add Features":

Picture Messaging
$0.00, Video & Picture Messaging (Pay Per Message)
$5.00, 250 MSG CAMERA $5
$10.00, UNL IN 500 MSG CAMERA $10
$15.00, UNL IN 1000 MSG CAMERA $15
$20.00, UNL IN 2500 MSG CAMERA $20

So if you're a txt messaging addict, pay the $20 a month and you get unlimited incoming messages and each message outgoing (for the first 2500) for an eighth of a cent each.

Probably.

No, the don't charge for message they send.

Virtually all companies charge $.10 to send and recieve text messages so they have no reason to charge a lower fee.

I am surprised to find carriers nowadays charge money to receive text message... I am still using my old AT&T wireless plan, and I can receive text msgs for free...

No way I will switch to a newer plan now

I always look at it like this. Anytime you use a feature on a phone, you are using processor time. So, in essence, receiving a message requires processor time, hence the charge

they should have include it at the sender's price. just like regullar phone calls. they've got the airtime (whenever you talk, either incoming or outgoing calls) already..

10 cents has been the standard listed on their website for a while, but the thing that pisses me off is that they dropped the plan option for "unlimited IN text messages + 250 out of network for $5." The lowest now is +500 for $10. It was there last week, gone this past weekend. I was about to switch, but after noticing that, I'm going to keep looking.

I think you may be missing my point. Similar to voice calls, when you receive a text message, it takes processor time to locate and deliver your message. Just as when you receive a voice call, a different processor performs basically the same task.
It's also simple demand curve economics: The quantity year-over-year of text messages have increased greatly, thus the price increases.

Other than text messaging, how do you like the service? My 2 year contract with Sprint is almost up (thank god) and I am contemplating going with Verizon.

In my area (western PA) the service is great. And I like the prepay.

I travel frequently... coverage is great. No roaming fees and no long distance charges on America's Choice plan. Even worked on Kauai (Hawaii) when I was there!
