On Bill Maher. Republicans have been winning the propaganda war since forever. Dems have really never effectively responded. Of course, it does help the Pubs to have a credulous target audience of ill-informed bozos. The Dems need to unapologetically pander to their cache of ill-informed bozos.

I was hoping for Dan Rather, but got Dan Savage. disappoint!
My bad on the title slip up. Dan Rather is busy fulminating on Facebook, liberal Andy Rooney style. Don't get me wrong, I resonate with everything he says. But this is 2017, and Dan Savage's message on messaging was timely and spot on, imho.

Dan Savage's paper "The Stranger" is pure propaganda, fox news style for left leaners

Narratives that foment ever more divisiveness make me want to puke. How about we talk ourselves off the ledge instead of over it.

How about we recognize that there actually is a sharp divide here--people who give a shit about others and people who don't--and that statistically the latter fall mostly onto the GOP side? Sorry, but ignoring the obvious is not going to help here. We're already fatally divided.

I'd like to get off the ledge, but that never requires acquiescing to the desires of Nazis in order to compromise. One group has to simply accept that they are a very real type of social cancer before progress can be made, because they will simply continue to let their little ideas metastisize in small forms long after that compromise has been reached. There is no truth to the assumption that "both ideas are right." That's a fallacy. If the cancer must be brought to heal to prevent its spread, that's the fault of the cancer, not the cure.

So, everyone who votes Democratic

True. The left is completely wrong. Thanks for the admission

When I read stuff like this I wonder how any debate is possible. To whom is the worn-out appellation of Nazi applied, anyone to the right of center? Anyone to the right of you? When the the talking stops, the shooting starts. Sounds like that's what you want.

I think that's a leap you're taking.

The "Nazi's" (I refrain from using that term) are those who are completely blind to anything but supporting hate and intolerance and worshipping a leader they think will give them their bleached world. A President isn't meant to be worshipped but should be worthy of at least a modicum of respect. These people are worthy of concern and worthy of being shut down...... By voting their Ushers of a deeply horrific Golden Era out of office. The Blind will not be negotiated with or reasoned with but that is not all Republicans. Unfortunately the partisan loyalists have yet to separate themselves from the Trumpers for a multitude of reasons I'm sure but until they do there really is no one to work with.

It's sad to me that you think that so many people believe the next obvious step is violence but I do understand your fear that that is what it may come to. If it does, it will be because too many rights have been stepped on and hate and intolerance will feel too close to victory to be ignored.

I hope you're clear that the Left (though angry) are the one's trying to stop democracy from being bastardized one bit at a time until it's unrecognizable. The Right wing wants what it wants at any cost including the demise of democracy.

Perhaps without even thinking, you've done something very similar to what zin has done, by lumping everyone who doesn't align precisely enough with you into "those who would end democracy." Pardon me, but that how is that substantively different than Nazi name calling? Once you take that mental step of categorizing and disregarding dehumanizing a vast swath of people after knowing just one single thing about them, it's you who are helping to bring about the demise of democracy, knowingly or not. It's you who are starting the ideological war by making enemies of your countrymen!

There has to be compromise in a healthy democracy, in fact, I'd say it's axiomatic. To reductively paint any opponent as an enemy of democracy simply because they disagree with you or belong to the other party is intellectually lazy.

Some things cannot be compromised with. A party that supports and eagerly pursues disenfranchisement, for example, is incompatible with a functioning democracy. A party that spreads falsehoods about groups that they shout down whenever those groups try to address those complaints, for example, is incompatible with a functional society in a multicultural world.

As you define it. But not everyone falls for fast and loose interpretations of language, for instance, a wish for positive voter ID is not necessarily an eager pursuit of "disenfranchisement," no more than a reduction in the rate of growth is a "cut." But this is how language is used by propagandists to demonize their fellow countrymen.

I'm pretty squarely right of center, as far as I see myself, I'm also on the left in many ways. There are fundamental rights and fundamental truths: freedom of the press, for one. I do not compromise on such rights, and nor should you. At some point, how you define yourself, left or right, simply doesn't matter. When fundamental truths are being trashed, the trashers must be brought to heal.

do you not agree?

And some use language to disguise their true motives. i.e the Muslim ban. We can have real discussions about the goals of policy/legislation or play the language semantics games.

I know I didn't dehumanize any one.

In fact I stated clearly that when Republicans are willing to work together that democrats will do so. Not because they are democrats per se but also because at this point they are under represented in the branches of Government (minority) they have few choices.

If you're asking me to be reasonable about the unreasonable... I think I am to am extent. I don't want anyone to come to harm but I do think this sub-section of believers is a problem. I know you see it.

If you have any suggestions as to how to work with those who will not be worked with please enlighten me. At this point it seems like you're suggesting dems bend to a back busting degree all under the ideal of balancing our beliefs. That can't happen.

There is a distinct difference from a life long Republican and a Trumpublican. Again, I know you see it. There is also a difference between a Republican disapproving of Trump and supporting their party AND a Republican that can see that Trump does not truly represent them and willing to fight him as well as supporting their Party. The latter are more likely to negotiate for the good of their own party and more willing to compromise because the government (the country) is full of people with differing beliefs.

I'm not sure why you want to paint all Trump haters with the same brush... and of course you don't know me but I don't dislike all Republicans even though we disagree (of course I know I'm right but I did mention I'm open-minded and I am absolutely not above seeing someone else's point of view... that has not been the case with the Cult 45's and it's been disappointing and discouraging to me).

Death of democracy... Trump and crew are walking all over it and toeing the line unapologetically and with malice there is a sub-section of people getting off on that for very ugly reasons (that's obvious... and I will not debate it). That's not good. ... No, I don't think all Republicans are cheering the idea. But Trump and his hand selected evil doers are not traditional Republicans. They mean the country and the people (all Americans who aren't them) harm. They are not good for the country or the world.

My biggest issue is with this Administration, they are evil. Secondly the Cult45's propping them up are scary. They won't discuss anything other than defending Trump and Republicans. I personally know many Republicans who would not want the likes of the worshippers defending them to Democrats.

Blah blah blah, how I do go on.

How could I disagree? But you must recognize that your latter stance is a significant departure from your former post which provoked my reaction. Despite the emotionally charged political environment, debate and engagement on issues must continue if we are to avoid a complete breakdown of the democratic process. I for one still have enough confidence in the separation of powers to think that our current situation is just another test that we will pass; a President can't break us, but we can break ourselves if we all decide to hate each other enough to stop talking.

Do you agree that the House Republicans must distance themselves from Trump for that to happen?

Play to your strengths... the economy is coming down. Wall Street will not save them. We will.

It's hateful, divisive, language that turns people away. It's the fight itself. Put down the fists and open your arms. The desperate will cling to any path available to them... just look at Trump. Be the COMPLETE alternative to trickle down.
