D-bags.

You did say "best".

First 5 mins are hillarious. I cried when i watched it. And then i watched it again, and i cried again.

Seriously?

I watched ~3 minutes of that and turned it off. "What if a ghost comes out of it?" This is like my niece telling jokes/stories. I wanted to pat him on the head and tell him to go find his mommy so I could go get some tylenol.

edit: I watched the rest. IS this his best material?

In that case I, personally, think Jon Stewart is a better comedian, and Eddie Izzard.

That was pretty damn hilarious, imo.

If I had to try and quantify exactly why I thought it was funny, I'd say it was because his skits tend to have a lot of layers; he has one overriding theme for a joke, and in that he goes through a bunch of tangents that develop as well. It gives the impression of being almost ad-hoc, and he very rarely gives the impression of having an organized show. Few pauses, no looking at a script, etc.

Anyway, I enjoy it.

I'm not trying to incite another argument here, but how is this any different than someone like Carlin that talks about all things that he does? If someone that can aggregate every curse word known in a single "joke" somehow more high-brow?

That's just one example. I love George Carlin, but I don't understand this comedy snobbery that seems to pervade this thread. It's comedy; it's all somewhat immature and silly.

So, let's get to the heart of this disdain for Dane (yeah, I'm obviously no comedian). Is it because he's a pop comic? Is it simply the "he's popular so I'll say he's overrated" mentality?

Serious question folks. Let's try to understand...

Well, I admit part of it is people like the OP claiming that DC is the best comic to come around in years. It peaks my curiousity, so I come in with high expectations, only to be hugely disappointed. Perhaps if someone posted that vid and said "Hey, this is my brother on stage in the local High School talent show," I'd probably say "Hey, that was decent, he might be able to make something with that if he keeps at it and work on some good material for a few more years."

I may be no critic, but I've seen better acts warming up at the local Improv. I literally did not laugh at a single piece in that "Sneezed on me" segment. I admit I did smile a bit when he said "Nothing happens when you die," but that was it. For a bit that made the OP and other "die" (with laughter, I assume,) I was underwhelmed to say the least.

I'm sorry my opinion differs from yours, but that's just the way I see it. Dane Cook == not funny (in anything I've ever seen him do.)

Seriously? It doesn't even make me crack a smile. I'm prepared to give him a shot, but if this is as good as it gets, he should be exiled from show business once and for all.

Well, at least it's just not me.

*shrug* To each, their own.

I thought that was pretty funny, but just in a different way. The way something like Royal Tenenbaums is funny versus something like Austin Powers: The former is more subtle and drier; the latter is more bombastic, silly and animated. I think part of Dane Cook's humor is that he's so animated.

Probably a bad analogy, but I don't know how else to describe it.

I, like a previous poster, just can't get into him. I watched his first comedy central show a couple years back and thought "Wow. That's terrible". It was the one where he talks about wanting to be an alien so he can spit acid or something. Just plain dumb. I'll laugh at some of his new stuff, but I still don't think he's near the "best". First impressions are hard to shake. Oh yeah, he also is being force fed to the "young, hip demographic". I'll admit, that makes me like him less. Probably shouldn't, but does.

QFT. Hedburg was the man. You can't beat him for deadpan.

i'm trying to think of an economic way to explain why i think cook is a poor comic. while i agree with the thesis of the Times article (Cook sucks), i think it gets many things wrong (comedy has to come from strife, comedians should be standoff-ish, etc). however, the following line cuts to the truth of the matter:

"[Hedburg] feared the very thing at which Cook excels ? tearing down the wall between the audience and himself but he loved that which Cook doesn't: the economy, the importance, of words."

cook is an entertaining and likeable - even enviable - guy. he's gregarious, decent-looking, and never awkward. he's popular for the same reasons that homecoming king is popular.

cook takes the goofy thoughts that you've had all your life, amplifies them, and acts them out like a monkey. rather than talent, i think that takes a lack of fear that comes from being super-duper likeable/popular. hedburg's goofy thoughts, contrastingly, are nothing that would've idly popped into my head. he's creative and meticulous with his word choice. his material stands on its own whereas cook's needs hair gel, a tight shirt, and a meticulously unkempt beard.
