Are you guys running out of things to argue over?
This is a weird thread
I was thinking that yesterday, and now I am contributing to its bizarre silliness.
Are you guys running out of things to argue over?
what? Of course De Niro is still up there. no question. Who cares what he does these days? And besides, even his comedic/slapsticky stuff is pretty good. Pacino...yeah. He likes to oversell himself way too much.
...I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time that DDL has "quit acting," btw.
lol, I'm not grumpy. I just don't understand why you are upset about an institution that specifically exists to promote a very specific set of qualities within its own industry is intentionally and necessarily closed off to people that are not in that industry. That is the point, my man. You said "people still think Oscars mean something?" I said: "yes, people within the film industry absolutely do because they are a very important metric to gauge the industry as a whole, a certain value of a very important part of the industry." Oscars determine salaries and production costs and funding for studios. They actually mean a whole lot if you are in the industry and, as a consumer, very much influence the type of content that is available to you.
They just don't mean anything to you, apparently. Which is fine.
I'm not upset. You seem to have taken offense to my take on it. I explained my reasoning and you angrily disagreed. There's not much else to say.
Thread derailed by a guy that didn't like Lewis' accolades but hasn't seen any of his movies.......OK.
WTF is wrong with people?
fair enough. But I am curious if you think the Grammy's are a fine institution and their awards are somehow far more valid than the Academy. I would be interested to hear if your preferred model, that we already have, does actually work for you.
No, I don't take much stock in any of those award ceremonies. I mean, sure it is nice for them to be recognized among peers, but for the general public, I just don't see it having much impact. There are tons of disagreements and bias based on current culture because the people who run those awards don't like change -- look at the Metallica/Jethro Tull stuff as an example.
In the aggregate, movies nominated for best picture tend to see a huge boon, so I guess for the general public it is indeed having an impact.
???So a poor man's Gary Oldman
If you read the link: He has "done" something since then. It releases in December. He hasn't done anything in five years so technically he was done back in 2012 with Lincoln.
LOL! Can't believe he even tried to continue his argument after this. Really walked right into it.We should do the same thing with all awards and sports. No one is having a good race at the Olympics? No medals! Lots of people playing tremendous soccer this year? Everyone wins the World Cup!
Wait. Just who is "looking stupid" here?!If you can think of some way to compare acting performances with the world cup, I'm all ears. If you don't have anything interesting or worthwhile to say, then lay off the sarcasm and quit looking stupid.
Ernest Goes to Jail is a masterpiece! So that's why we got 4 (or was it 5) Ernest movies? I mean...without those awards, we'd still get good movies and crap movies.
So that's why we got 4 (or was it 5) Ernest movies? I mean...without those awards, we'd still get good movies and crap movies.
No, that's why you get something other than Ernest movies. Not sure if you are serious or not here? There is objective evidence that being nominated for a best picture Oscar makes way more people watch a good movie they weren't otherwise planning to watch. You don't think that affects what movies studios make?
But seriously:
Ernest is just an example of people getting what they want. The character started out as a pitchman who people liked so much that he got a TV show and eventually movies. When people had enough of it, they stopped. That's the free market. I loved Ernest as a kid and even though it's hard to watch now, I support free-market demand-based movie making as much as I support the medium as a form of artistic expression. Why can't we have both?
I am 100% serious. They are a joke. Do you seriously think the masses pick what movies they watched based on that? They don't. The people who choose those movies do not represent you or I. You may agree with their choices, but it doesn't mean they are right or the masses care.
you think daniel day lewis is a goat fucker?
Kings of New York isn't bad.I should probably watch one of his films at some point.
HanksNot really. The club gets VERY small at the top. DDL, Oldman, Streep...it's really hard to put anyone else on their level.
If you say Pacino or De Niro, you lose a testicle.
