We are redoing the living room this week (tearing down walls, putting up drywall, painting etc) but it has been decided that we will finally buy our HDTV next week.

Our choice?

The Hitachi 50V715 (LCD)
Screenies of the 810, which is for all intents and purposes, the same damn thing except with better aesthetics

The competition:

Samsung HL-P5063W (DLP)

Why we Didn't choose the Sammy:

The screen door effect and rainbow effects were really not present enough to influence decison. In general, the viewing angle was not up to par with what my parents wanted. In addition, vibrant color on the TV was quite limited to a sweetspot to an even greater extent. As for the resolution and clearness, we were not satisfied with its performance with 1080i. We noticed a lack of sharpness that was greater than on other models. As for the featureset, it met or outclassed its competitors with both HDMI and DVI HDCP inputs included inaddition to the regular component connection fare.

Overall, the Samsung was a nice TV, but it appeared too dark at an angle, and did not seem to handle 1080i well, of which msot of the content that it will be used for will consist of (InHD, CBS etc)

Why we chose the Hitachi:

First and foremost, it was VERY bright. Astoundingly bright. We were immediately impressed by the progress that LCDs have made in the rear-projection market.
Colors were incredibly vivid and pronounced, but more importantly, accurate. Most other sets, even when adjusted, showed lackluster performance, in our opinion in well-lit areas, of which this TV will see daily. As for performance on content, both 720p and 1080i looked marvelous. Colors were precise, response time was good, and ther was a good balance of sharpness and blending. As for the connections, the Hitachi does offer components and HDCP HDMI inputs (obviously), but no DVI, which can be taken care of with an adapter. (I'm sure we will be raped on the price by a handsome margin, even online
That said, given the use of an adapter, the featureset is great. Color adjustments are seemingly infinite, and SURPRISINGLY, the black levels were acceptable. That is what single handedly sold that TV. Altough it wasn't at the level of the Samsung, it was marvelously acceptable, whatever that means

In the end, it was the most appealing TV to my parents in the showroom, and it was quite acceptable on paper

Why we didn't go with the Hitachi 50VS810

Overall, the aesthetics are top notch, outclassing almost everything in this price range, but overall the internals are quite similar. Pretty much the only difference is the inclusion of the second HDMI port, but that will prove useless to us, at least for now.

The main problem with it seems to lay in the manufacturing. If I understood correctly, some of the boyz at AVS said that there had been QA problems with the 810 that led to Green bleeding on the screen. Many had their TV replaced, and even them some had additional problems. We decided to skip on that purchase based on many complaints nad questions that have yet to be resoled and/or answered. The v715 seems to be immune from this problem.

Overall, the TV seems liek a very handsome and fufilling purchase in the making. Of course the TV has gimmicks, as do all, such as its Virtual 1080p upconversion chip that has yet to be judges and a built in cable card that is not of the second revision interactive kind, but it is acceptable.

This LCD has shown us everything we want to see.
The price (at a discount no less) is fine, the colros are vibrant, the size is monstrous, the features are extensive, and in the end, we believ ethat we will leave the store satisfyied.

And now the par that matters, and will shaatter hearts, damage egos, and break up marriages, or potential marriages (I'm lookign at you Warcrow :

I will only psot HD clips until I get the TV. Once we get it, we will msot likely be so enthralled in the sheer magnificence that are 720p and 1080i, that hell, I might even cut down on posting because.

Either way, I will me maxing out my puny 40KB/s until them flooding FatKoreans server with tasty HD treats for all.

That you for your time, and if anyone has the fvking nerve to ask for cliffs, they can just rot in hell

They are buying now. I sure as hell will wait, but they would rather not.

Their current TV is a 1970's RCA that serves as living room furniture:laugh:

We are redoing the entire house, and we agreed that we'd buy the TV when we redid the Living room. We were about to buy it first, but they decided to wait until everythign was done.

They are also getting an Onkyo 770 HTiaB....not the greatest, but very nice for them...

I swear, in a room dark enough and a screen big enough, you might even think you were out there. (haven't seen the other vids yet, but there's one that's even bigger).

I think I have it already let me check

You sure the sales guy didn't turn the contrast and brightness on the Hitachi to max and Samsung to 20%?

As you have your TV for longer and get more used to it, contrast (more specifically black level and shadow detail) tends to become a greater and greater determinant of picture quality. The longer I have my D-ILA projector, the more I notice the black levels (the shadow detail is actually reasonably good on this technology considering the contrast and BL). It's definitely something to consider if you're looking at a TV for long term use, especially if you're doing some reconstruction work.

If possible, you want to try to look at the TV in the same typical illumination as you'd get in your living room. Take a DVD like LOTR or Dark City.

If you can, try to see the Toshiba piece. Also, if you like bright vivid colors, you may also want to see the JVC D-ILA sets. The JVC has very very good punch to the colors, but they're a bit less "cartoonish" in my opinion.
