The stupid thing is if you spend 2 hours a day here and pull 2 megs of data then it makes NO DIFFERENCE from any hosting standpoint whether you are pulling the data at 2k or 200k a second. Seriously folks have you ever heard of a hosting company that said, "We'll charge you $20 month for 200k speed or $2 for 2k speed"????
I would subscribe if the price were within reason, that is at least half what I spend on hosting and domain registration per month (less than $20) and if I did not feel like the non-subscribers were put behind a bandwidth limiter (I would be extremely surprised if we were not seeing how slow the forums have been). Look in the hot deals forum right now you can get the following hosting for less than you would pay for a years subscription:
80 megs of space and 3 gig transfer per month (Dixiesys double October deal) for $20/yr
You can even add a domain for less than $9 for a grand total of $29 month or $1 less than a subscription....

Here's a news flash for you. Anand doesn't run these forums to make money. He does it out of the kindness of his heart and to add a valuable feature to the overall site. He was losing money hand over fist with the forums pre-subscriber days. In an effort to stop the hemmoraging of cash, the decision was made to put a bandwidth cap on the regular forums and offer a subscriber-only server. Because most of the people that subscribe are heavy posters, I imagine that bandwidth bill doesn't generate any extra cash either.Originally posted by: Moohooya
I don't think Anand is hurting for money. Not that he doesn't have a right to make a living like everyone else, but I think it is petty to put everyone else behind a bandwith limiter. When he added the 'pay for speed' option I noticed a HUGE speed degredatrion. No, the number of people logged in and lurking didn't double overnight, they just slowed it down to a crawl for the rest of us.
He'd have much happier members if he did not artifically slow down the non subscribers. Subscribers can go banner free, and even have their own dedicated server if he feels, but this speed sucks. I actually post and frequent here much less often now, and no doubt one day will stop altogeher. I don't think I am alone. Look at the highly tech forum. It used to be so much fun. Now it is a load of cr@p. Many of the questions are not highly technical. I don't believe all the questions have beem asked, but people have moved on and away from here.
