Its simply a marketing ploy. AT has dramatically decreased the bandwidth to non-subscribers in order to push them to paying for the service.

...not really...

Seriously though, it made a huge difference for me when I switched.

I think Zuni or one of the admins said that the subscriber servers are running on 2 AthlonXP 1900 systems with their own internet hookup. If I remember right anyway....

The stupid thing is if you spend 2 hours a day here and pull 2 megs of data then it makes NO DIFFERENCE from any hosting standpoint whether you are pulling the data at 2k or 200k a second. Seriously folks have you ever heard of a hosting company that said, "We'll charge you $20 month for 200k speed or $2 for 2k speed"????

I would subscribe if the price were within reason, that is at least half what I spend on hosting and domain registration per month (less than $20) and if I did not feel like the non-subscribers were put behind a bandwidth limiter (I would be extremely surprised if we were not seeing how slow the forums have been). Look in the hot deals forum right now you can get the following hosting for less than you would pay for a years subscription:
80 megs of space and 3 gig transfer per month (Dixiesys double October deal) for $20/yr
You can even add a domain for less than $9 for a grand total of $29 month or $1 less than a subscription....

Yes. Most co-locations not only charge you for the amount of bandwidth used, but the speed at which you use it.

Ok, show me the price it would cost to host these forums.

But what does make a difference is waiting 5 seconds for a page to load, and waiting 65 seconds for a page to load.

The non-subscribers ARE behind a bandwidth limiter. They did this because the amount of bandwidth being used by the forums was costing them too much.

The database alone is over 3gbs, and the majority of that is resident in memory on the forums. Taking your analogy above that someone browsing for 2hrs uses 2MBs of bandwidth, that's 1MB/hr

There are (on average) about 250 users logged in, and say another 250 more lurking (this is the case, generally, if not more lurking). Say each one uses their allocated 1MB/hr. That's already 500MB/hr. Over a month, this works out at "*buzz* *whiirrr* 12GB per day, 3600GB per month!!! That's 4,320GB per YEAR! 4TB transfer per year, based on your crude guesses.

If you enjoy coming here, like the huge amount of technical advise you get, but don't like the speed (or lack of), pay your $30 per year, give up that Happy Meal every month, subscribe, and get the forums at full speed, bandwidth unlimited, full text searches, and the feeling that you've given something back to the community that has given you so much

I very seldom frequent this forum (at most, once a month on 5 minute duration to ask a question) but those who come regularly should pony up the cash if you cannot tolerate the bandwidth limit. There are some sites out there that charge a subscription fee but it has its perks (free porn, warez, free porn, oh did I mention free porn?) Point is, it's a worthy $30/yr IMO. For frame of reference, the site I frequent off-topic.net consumes a mad load of bandwidth which was once said to be $1400 for bw alone. People post useless baloney mostly and there are NO ADS! dude who runs it is getting raped but he seems to enjoy doing it, so who am I to judge.

Pay you cheap bastards

Hmmm... I took that to mean that Anandtech was slow. If that was his statement then subscribing to the forums will do nothing for him. If by anandtech.com he meant the forums, then he should subscribe and be assimilated (sp?) like the rest of us!

DEFINITELY faster, I have dial-up and I subscribed and it's like being on cable internet.
Makes it so much easier to post and surf the forums. Go subscribe now!

I don't think Anand is hurting for money. Not that he doesn't have a right to make a living like everyone else, but I think it is petty to put everyone else behind a bandwith limiter. When he added the 'pay for speed' option I noticed a HUGE speed degredatrion. No, the number of people logged in and lurking didn't double overnight, they just slowed it down to a crawl for the rest of us.

He'd have much happier members if he did not artifically slow down the non subscribers. Subscribers can go banner free, and even have their own dedicated server if he feels, but this speed sucks. I actually post and frequent here much less often now, and no doubt one day will stop altogeher. I don't think I am alone. Look at the highly tech forum. It used to be so much fun. Now it is a load of cr@p. Many of the questions are not highly technical. I don't believe all the questions have beem asked, but people have moved on and away from here.

Here's a news flash for you. Anand doesn't run these forums to make money. He does it out of the kindness of his heart and to add a valuable feature to the overall site. He was losing money hand over fist with the forums pre-subscriber days. In an effort to stop the hemmoraging of cash, the decision was made to put a bandwidth cap on the regular forums and offer a subscriber-only server. Because most of the people that subscribe are heavy posters, I imagine that bandwidth bill doesn't generate any extra cash either.

UPDATE

These forums are generating money for AT. The "losing" days were a short period between significant ad revenue and implementation of the subscriber forums.

"Kindness" does not a successful business model make.
