Seriously, what an idiot.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — National Park Service employees have recovered the body of a California man who died Friday after falling off an overlook at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

A witness says the man was trying to jump from one outcropping to another when he fell between Pipe Creek Vista and the visitor center on the South Rim.

The victim is identified as 42-year-old Andrew N. Stires of Burbank, Calif.
A National Park Service helicopter crew, returning from a flight below the rim, found the body located approximately 500 feet below the rim.

I'd have to see the gap before passing judgment. It might have just been a dumb accident. Some people might think hurdling down a road at 75mph, with only a couple feet to either side of you is stupid ;^)

At Disneyland a few months ago a kid climbed on the railing of a ride queue that was on a second story and acted like he was going to fall and fell. Unfortunately he survived.

He was probably showing off for buddies or a woman and had a bit too much to drink. He fell 500 ft!

Probably, but lets say it was an 8' gap. That's not an unreasonable jump, even for a geezer like me(same age as death boy), but an unfortunate step could send you down the hole.

Yeah, but you would be an idiot to try an 8' jump over a 500' drop.

Would you? An 8' jump is easy as can be. No harder than keeping a car between the white lines, and people do that every day, with similar consequences in case of failure.

Would be interesting to see a picture of that particular outcropping so we could more accurately judge what happened.

For a standing broad jump 8' is an EXCELLENT jump for a young guy in good condition. For a 42 year old to attempt it would be almost certain death. As he was on an outcropping I doubt he had much of a run up or very sure footing. With sure death awaiting a miss even a 5' gap would be a stupid thing to attempt. This guy deserved his horrible death and the gene pool thanks him for his contribution.

Heck no, I would not jump an 8' gap with a 500 ft drop beneath me. You're nuts if you think they compare.

As was mentioned earlier, this guy was supposedly jumping around on outcroppings. His footing was probably shit. What is the point in trying that jump when the slightest mistake means instant death and actually doing it means nothing?

1. Training
2. Practice
3. Licensed
4. Mild fuck up = dings
5. Major fuck up = insurance

5 things which were NOT the case here.

Practice jumping? I don't know how you spent your childhood, but you probably should have gotten out of the house more ;^)

Licensed? Irrelevant. I bet more than half the people driving legally, shouldn't be. Throw a cell phone in the mix, and it gets worse.

Mild fuck up at 75mph starts disastrous, and gets worse from there.

Major fuck up=dead in both cases

Dude are we really arguing this?

I'll take my odds driving from LA -> OC 100x vs trying that jump ONCE
