Why does everyone want something but doesn't want to pay?
It's like teenagers since the dawn of time. They all want a job but none of them want to work.

Damn straight!

OP the only real way to protect yourself is to hire a hollywood camera man with a $4,000,000 3D 4K camera to sit in your car at all times.

It will cost you but it is the only way to be sure.

I've got a $250 Garmin Dashcam in one car and a $45 G1W in another. The difference is not significant. If I were buying another, it would be a G1W type. Also much more pleasing aesthetically and easier to hide.

Dear god, the hideous spoiler at 4:15.

I also endorse a G1W/G1WH dashcam. Although I paid more for a pre-made wiring harness to install it with than I did for the cam itself, I'm also using a memory card that costs more than the camera it's in. Adding together the cost of everything I probably paid $156 for everything involved. You can definitely do it cheaper with a cheap memory card and using the supplied accessory adapter, but I wanted to wire it up well so I got a fusetap harness and completely concealed the wiring.

I have this one and its great

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006P8MG6M

But one thats in stock is

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006P8MG6M

by the same company.

My only complaint with the new one is it has a proprietary mount. The other one has a standard threaded camera mount and you can buy all kinds of tripon & suction cup mounts to work with it.

But the recording on either is excellent. Very efficient compression, you can get a whole month of driving on a 32gb card. Also the video quality is great for such a tiny sensor. Very strong low-light vision. Easy to use menus, easy playback, wide angle lens catches everything.

Its gotten me out of trouble with the police two times now, so already paid for itself. (Cops said I ran a red light, showed them the vid. It was yellow. Let me go.)

I ordered the fuse tap for $1.50 then wired the cig adapter into that. Why was the wiring harness so expensive?

Oh btw, just another random perk of the G1Ws is that it has an LED in the front that can be used as a light source (not bright enough for anything at all). If you configure it to be always on with the camera, at night it will make the car in front of you wonder wtf just pulled up.

We don't really have a lot of these cams in the UK, how are they powered and how long do they record for? I assume they just loop when they get full.

Explain pls

You put in a MicroSD memory card, same as most cell phones. I use a class 10 32gb card in mine. That gets me several hours.
Once its full it just records over the oldest file automatically.

For power you just plug into a cig lighter that is powered when the car runs and off when the car if off. That way the camera turns off/on when the car runs.

You can also buy kits to hard wire but I just use the Cig lighter.

This is the harness I used. I do not currently have access to a soldering iron, a crimper, hot glue gun, or any wiring tools. I decided I'd rather have a complete wiring harness instead of buy some cheap tools and connectors to rig my own. I didn't really want to pay that much for it, but I could not find any other complete harnesses.

I have this one. As good as the G1W but smaller profile. The link has a pic of both on the guys windshield and you can clearly see it's a better design (size wise)

There's a thread on dashcamtalk too. Just google it.

Nice, I like the mounting system. Do you know if it has any kind of parking recording features? I was looking at a BlackVue, but that's like $500+ for a full setup with the battery adapter. Someone hit my car door at Home Depot the other day & drove off...I walked out to a nice golf ball-sized dent on the passenger door

A dash cam isn't going to protect you from tickets.

You need keen eyes, some real-life experience on where and what to look for, plus some countermeasures:

1) Radar detector
2) Laser jammer
3) Crowd-sourced traffic enforcement data (Waze, Escort Live)

Take it from someone who has had more experience than most with this type of stuff.
