Let's be honest. Any realistic outcome to this situation that didn't involve vehicular pwning would still garner bloviation from the peanut gallery.
1. The loser takes the gun and murders one or multiple civilians. "another day another shooting, ban guns." Cops track down loser and loser gets shot. "Couldn't they have just called a negotiator?"
2. The loser continues to meander around town firing shots, cops confront loser and tell him to surrender, loser points gun, loser takes dirt nap. "Couldn't they have called in a sharpshooter to shoot his achilles to render him immobile, then shoot the gun out of his hand?"
Bonus pie in the sky scenario - Cops go out of their way to use non lethal force, suspect is tazed, drops like a sack of potatoes. "that's harsh, couldn't they have just incapacitated him with a tranquilizer gun?".

I think it characterizes your sentiments toward law enforcement quite well actually. This story could have ended with a lot more blood. Luckily no civilians were shot, the cops didn't gun the loser down, and the loser walked away with his life. Yet you persist, with no end in sight to your inability to come to grips with reality.
