Data Modeling?

aside from ERwin, because i'm having problems trying to register the trial, are there any other data modeling tools out there that will automatically generate database scripts? TIA

LOL, I spent about 30 minutes on the phone a month ago with CA customer support and various engineers trying to get ERwin installed.

What database platform are you using?

mysql, but i'm an oracle guy


i take it i'm not gonna be able to use erwin unless i spend time talkin with CA?


i'm irritated because after u enter the demo code they give you, if you don't succesfully register the software then, or you close it out, you can't register it again and you can't enter that serial again. i had to install it on my server just to have a fresh machine, and while registering it kept saying it couldn't contact the registration server :|


now i can't delete the registration files so i can re-try the demo password because they hijack my system and hide the files, tracking that i already used a serial code. whatever idiot designed this security scheme should be fired, and then shot!

You ought to see some of the licensing hoops that network administrators for public education have to jump through, for poorly written software... I can think of a couple of packages that I finally concluded have over 30 different hidden license files, registry keys, and ini entries. They're a PITA.

don't tell me about licensing for public education geek, i was the licensing manager for my university . i remember sas or spss being some of the worst. mathematica was pretty bad too

microsoft seems to have the best IMO

i recently used ERWin trial for a database class of mine, i got it installed, but during my first attempt there was a registration process and being paranoid i just said "skip it" and it f*cked up the installation completely, ...it ended and not all of the software was installed, so i couldn't open it, so i tried to re install it and it gave me error message that i've already used the trial license key. so i had to uninstall it....and i thought i could re install it using my old key, but that didnt work, so i re signed up with CA to get a new key, and it still didnt work cuz it would have my old information, so i had to delete all that info from the registry, finally got it to work....but yeah, if you follow the installation step by step without skipping any of it, you should be fine.

oh btw, so far i've heard ERWin is the best data modeling tool out there...even though it's not based on any theory, but it works, and it's extremely easy to use

I think that high school products have it even worse sometimes, after talking to some of my friends that work at different universities... I think some companies just put crap in their products for the sole intention of testing the network admins at the end location...

The most laughable security mechanism is Macromedia's latest dream. You delete a few keys here and there, and it regenerates its own security key without even prompting the user. lol

bacardi, you had the exact same problem i am having. i used erwin before on another windows install, and have used it in the past. it is a really good tool. i'm now thinking about mudding through my registry to delete the keys, but why wouldn't lavasoft prompt me about a registry edit? do u remember the key you were searching for? i was thinking erwin


geek, that is pretty funny that the companies wanna test the admins. but damn it, i WISH I COULD GET THIS THING TO WORK!!! i spent more time trying to get erwin to work, than i would spend actually designing the DB!

actually, the way i went about it was to simply look up the trial license key #. if you know what it is, or if you try to reinstall it'll probably show you, and just search for that and delete it from the registry. hope it works out for you, i'm sure it should
