Hi all

I tried to install a new hard drive. My old hard drive letter is gone after I restart my computer (other three hard drives can be recognosed and found in 'my computer'). It can be found in my hardware list. But I can't find it in 'my computer'. Thus I can't find all my data.
I am using Windows 2000 Pro. My computer is Gateway 6400 server. I have two processors and four hard drives ( two SCSI drives and two IDE drives). The lost one is IDE drive and the one I tried to install is also IDE drive.
How can I get my data back from my old drive? Give some suggestion, please. I lost 70 GB data. Please help me.
Thanks.

Update:
I got EasyRecovery Pro. It is just amazing. I recovered all my data. Almost 80 GB.
I am very excited about it. There are many mp3 files which I collected for years.
Thanks.

More info needed like what controllers what is connected to.

If you need to get to your data, why not just hook things back up like they were.

Have you tried to access the drive from the command prompt? Try throwing it in another computer. Is it FAT32 or NTFS?

Sorry about that. It is NTFS. I tried to return to the original condition. But that drive still can't be found. OS can recognise it. It is in the hardware list but you can't see it in "my computer". What can I do?
Thanks.

The key here is I can't return to my original condition after I make them back like they were.
The drive with many data can be recognised by Windows but isnot found in "my computer". It looks like OS problem. Something has been changed during the process I did. My mother board has two controllers. Two IDE drives are on the same cable. I don't know what happened. Please give me any comments or links. Thanks.
PS. It isnot visible in my Disk management.

Did you double-check the cabling? (check the master/slave/cable select jumpers, try swapping the two drives on the two connectors, try a different cable, etc). A cabling problem can cause very strange results.

Good Luck,

It's a cabling or HDD setting problem...there is almost no other way (unless you dropped it or something) that your BIOS can see it and your OS can't.

Worst case scenario...call the data recovery dude and get your 70 GB's cut to DVD.

If you go to Disk Management (Start --> settings --> control panel --> administrative tools --> computer management), does it show up with a drive letter?

I agree it is probably the jumper settings on the drive, and/or how the cables are connected. However, I did have this happen to me once a few years ago. I tried everything, and finally reinstalled the OS which solved the problem. I never understood why.

I've checked the master/slave settings of my HD. I followed what tagej said. All hard drives can be found in Disk Management right now.
Then I arranged a volume number to the problematic hard drive. It shows this drive is 100% free (no data at all). I was asked to format this drive when I click drive letter in 'my computer'. I click 'no' so that I can't enter this drive. I am really worried about it.
Please give me some comments. I really appreciate it.

What kind of drive is it?....Western Digital? Seagate....?? etc...
Is this running off the IDE controllers that are onboard the mobo?....they wouldn't IDE RAID would they?

First, do you know that the data is still on the drive? Try popping it in another machine and see if the data is actually there. If so, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Is this right: You had 2 scsi drives and an ide. You installed another IDE and the original IDE is no longer visible?

My initial guess is that the drive letter assignment between SCSI and IDE is screwing things up.

teddymines: you are right. I have two SCSI drives and two IDE drives. I will try to install it on another computer.
This is WD drive (5400 rpm).
Thanks.

Just a thought, but was the HD that you are having problems with the main drive, with Windows installed on it? I'm wondering if you installed Windows on the new drive, and now there is a conflict with Windows still installed on the old drive. You could try setting up the problem drive as the only drive, and see if it boots. If it does, you could backup all your data, reformat the drive, then hookup the new drive again
