Hi all

I tried to install a new hard drive. My old hard drive letter is gone after I restart my computer (other three hard drives can be recognosed and found in 'my computer'). It can be found in my hardware list. But I can't find it in 'my computer'. Thus I can't find all my data.
I am using Windows 2000 Pro. My computer is Gateway 6400 server. I have two processors and four hard drives ( two SCSI drives and two IDE drives). The lost one is IDE drive and the one I tried to install is also IDE drive.
How can I get my data back from my old drive? Give some suggestion, please. I lost 70 GB data. Please help me.
Thanks.

Hi there, more than likely there's one of two things going on.

First, when you installed the new drive, did you install it on the same IDE cable as the old one? Did you check the master/slave settings on both drives first to make sure one (the one on the end of the cable) is set to be the master while the other one is the slave? If not, that's probably the problem. Also, there's a small chance that the drives you're trying to use together might not want to work together on the same IDE cable.

Also, in the bios, did you make sure all IDE drives are set to "Auto" detect mode?

I doubt whether any of the info is gone, unless the drive is completely "dead" and doesn't spin anymore etc. Unhook the new drive, put the old one back in, and I'd bet it will be back to 'normal'. Then, just make sure you select the right master/slave settings for the two drives, and make sure your IDE cables are put in correctly on each drive (if they are 'keyed', they only go in one way -- if not, they 'fit' either way, but only one way is the 'correct' way and will allow it to function.

Sorry about that. It is NTFS. I tried to return to the original condition. But that drive still can't be found. OS can recognise it. It is in the hardware list but you can't see it in "my computer". What can I do?
Thanks.

Windows 2000 will see NTFS but a DOS will not see it at all.

Did you follow tagej information ?

Have you also checked to make sure your drive is visible in your Disk Management ? ( can be found by right click "My Computer" and select "manage" )

The key here is I can't return to my original condition after I make them back like they were.
The drive with many data can be recognised by Windows but isnot found in "my computer". It looks like OS problem. Something has been changed during the process I did. My mother board has two controllers. Two IDE drives are on the same cable. I don't know what happened. Please give me any comments or links. Thanks.
PS. It isnot visible in my Disk management.

I've checked the master/slave settings of my HD. I followed what tagej said. All hard drives can be found in Disk Management right now.
Then I arranged a volume number to the problematic hard drive. It shows this drive is 100% free (no data at all). I was asked to format this drive when I click drive letter in 'my computer'. I click 'no' so that I can't enter this drive. I am really worried about it.
Please give me some comments. I really appreciate it.

Well you with your last bit of imformation I'd suggest you get a file recovery program such as Easy Recovery Professional Edition , that's probably going to be your only way of recovering all your data that has seemingly disappeared.EasyRecovery Pro

Hey, that's odd 'cos I've got a free copy of that and I just used it to recover a screwed HDD. I accidentally dropped the HDD (yes - ha ha - you can laugh!) and unsurprisingly Window$ wouldn't recognise it. I put the HDD in my computer that had EasyRecovery Pro on it and it managed to recover all of the important data I needed

PM me with your e-mail address and meanwhile I'll see if I can find a copy to send you.

teknodude: I got EasyRecovery Pro. It is just amazing. I recovered all my data. Almost 80 GB.
I am very excited about it. There are many mp3 files which I collected for years.
Thanks.

No problem d00d

Excited about recovering data? Man, I know the feeling after thinking I'd totally lost all my MySQL databases on my test server
