Data Recovery from IBM 765L HD

Greetings!

I have an old IBM 765 laptop that has "gone to a better place". However, the HD is still fine, and I would like to recover data from it.

What I am searching for is some kind of adapter that would allow that HD to be hooked up as a standard IDE drive in a desktop, or someone local to Columbia, Md with a similar laptop that I could borrow/rent long enough to recover the data.

You may also want to look into a 2.5inch USB enclosure for your HDD that would allow you to hook it up to just about any system.

Good idea.

An adapter to use it via desktop is $6.50, so going the extra $15 or so for an enclosure is a good idea.. you'll have to weight that of course against the size of the drive, which being from a 765 ThinkPad, is probably very small by today's standards.

Just get one of these 2.5" to 3.5" HDD adapters: http://tekgems.com/Products/et-1620-ada-hd-108.htm

They're cheap and work very well. With them you can even use a laptop drive as the main HDD in a desktop -- cuts down on noise / heat, but you loose a little in speed.

Unfortunatly, the drive in this laptop doesn't use the "standard" small ID connector like so many other laptops do now ... so the adaptors I have seen for sale are not going to fit it. :-(

Are you sure that the actual drive isn't encased in a hard drive caddy? That's how they often attach hard drives from IBM / Dell / HP. Alot of the times there is also a different connector just pushed onto the ide pins for the connection which can make it look like a different type of drive / connector. The connector should easily slide off.

For instance, here is the Caddy for the 765 series. You should just need to remove a couple of screws and the 12.5mm IDE hard drive will be inside: http://www.xtradisk.com/cgi-bi...mp;sid=8y4GGl10F5En8Wx
