Tell him to wrap the drive up in an anti-static bag, place it in his freezer for a few hours and then give it a try.
I'm not kidding...
I'm using a WD 120GB JB drive that hard locked on me and then wouldn't even boot up. I let it sit for a few hours. It booted back up and ran for a few minutes.
BTW, My case is open and runs very cool inside.

I placed it in my freezer for a few hours, slapped it back in, and got ready with a CDR to burn data I needed.
That was months ago and it's been running fine ever since! No RMA, nothing else but freezing it for a few hours.
Freezing may not work for every HD... But it's FREE and worth a shot! It may run long enough to burn data to a CDR.
