data recovery?

anyone know any hard drive data recovery methods? my friend lost all his data tonight and he's pretty much freaking out. any help would be great...

I've heard of putting it in the freezer for a couple of hours and them trying to see if it works (seriously).

Tell him to wrap the drive up in an anti-static bag, place it in his freezer for a few hours and then give it a try.

I'm not kidding...
I'm using a WD 120GB JB drive that hard locked on me and then wouldn't even boot up. I let it sit for a few hours. It booted back up and ran for a few minutes.
BTW, My case is open and runs very cool inside.

The light bulb went off over my head...
I placed it in my freezer for a few hours, slapped it back in, and got ready with a CDR to burn data I needed.
That was months ago and it's been running fine ever since! No RMA, nothing else but freezing it for a few hours.



Freezing may not work for every HD... But it's FREE and worth a shot! It may run long enough to burn data to a CDR.

Depends on how he lost it. If it was a deleted directory(ies) or a quick format (erase - not full) then you might try this software. It will not recover encrypted files however. It must also be run on another system running Windows with the hard drive in question to be attached as a slave. After the files are recovered they can be placed back on the hard drive after a fresh install of Windows. Kind of tricky but it works.

well, the freezer trick didn't do it. he's going to try to attach it as a slave to another computer later today. thanks for the links and advice.

they even keep the manufactuer's warranty intact if they can't get the data back and you end up RMAing the hard drive (for example)

yeah, i've used this software at work. You can get either the FAT or NTFS versions. It takes awhile but it works.
