Data Transfer from Desktop to Laptop

What's the best way to transfer data from a Desktop to a Laptop if I don't have a zip drive or CD-RW drive?

This might be a stupid question but I never own more than one computer before.
Can you hook up a serial cable or a USB cable to transfer data from your desktop to laptop?

With a serial or parallel link all you need is the cable. Everything else comes with windows. Its called somethong like direct cable link, and you can use hyperterminal to transfer data. Parallel is fastest.

More possibilities with laplink or even PCAnywhere, but more expensive.

Fastest way of course is USB, but it requires a special! cable for bidirectional use, etc. so it becomes quite expensive.
