The answer to your question is resoundingly YES....

It's like having an imaginary gun in your pocket and pretending to hold someone up at a convenient store... something along that line...

This doesn't mean that his intentions were to do anything but sleep with a child. If they had evidence to prove he was going to commit a crime, they should prosecute. There was intention to commit a crime, along with a trail of evidence that was left during the process of the sting. Attempted crimes are still crimes. Frankly I would rather law enforcement intervene prior to the actually crime, to avert more harm towards the would be victims.

You're leaving out the physical act. If you showed up at a hardware store with a gun and a note for a bank teller, then yes. It's not my fault that you're too stupid to distnguish between a hammer and a stack of $100s.

Intent is a very important legal concept that I don'tt hink the public gets. It's a crime in and of itself, as well as necessary for the escalation of lesser degree offenses to 1st degree - what do you think the difference between manslaughter/2nd degree murder/1st degree murder is? It's transferrable as well - if I made you mad enough with this post to come kill me, but you shoot someone else by mistake instead, you're still guilty of 1st or 2nd degree murder. The mistake doesn't negate the intent, same as in this case.

It seems we have a person on the defensive, that may be coaxed into a meeting with underaged children.
