A teacher(who is also a parent) once told me this story:

I took my kids to McDonalds and bought them chicken nuggets.
They were eating and I asked them, "Can I have one?"
They both said "no."
I took the nuggets from them and threw it in the trash.
The kids cried but at the end of the day, they learned their lesson.
Now anytime I buy something for them they always ask me first before eating from it "Do you want some, dad?"

Maybe that's what this dad was trying to accomplish here? Why else would he throw away perfectly good food he already bought?

If I was this dad, I'd just sell the laptop though. A "personal" laptop is an unneeded luxury for a high school kid. If I had a kid and they want to use the computer, they can use the desktop computer in the dining room.

Raising disrespectful, asshole children should be unacceptable. Most kids are naturally self-absorbed little shits, and it's the parents job to cure them of that. If that requires a little tough love, and the parent don't wuss out, then they should be congratulated for living up to their responsibility and procreating responsibly.

The world would be a better place if more parents were like this guy. The 'kids will be kids' hands-off, respect your child's privacy approach to parenting has failed. Anyone who says different only has their own parents to blame for not raising them correctly.
