wow wtf... I don't agree with this.

I agree. I have raised a daughter to full adulthood and have another one who is about to be a teenager so I know how to get the job done. To make a video of using a gun to destroy your daughter's laptop is way overboard and is a lousy way to reach your daughter. I don't know all the particulars of this relationship, but as a father you don't do things like this.

on one hand i think he over reacted. destroying her laptop? how about giving it to charity? or such? would have the same effect.

i have no issue with him hacking her facebook . sounds like the kid is a spoiled brat (btw wich is his fault)

edit: I DO think this is going to backfire on the guy. his daughter is going to get major attention and i suspect idiots will report them to dcfs, homeland security etc

I graduated from high school last year and as the only person in my public high school to carry a laptop daily I can assure you that it is not necessary. In fact, I would call BS on your statement of 6th grader using a laptop daily unless it was for a specific program or magnet school. Even then I doubt it. The only laptops in my high school that was not mine were found in the Bio-med Labs where those students would use them for that class and that class only.

No I didn't go to some inner-city school system, or a school system in a poor area, the operating budget for the system is around $2.128 Billion for this FY.

Yes it's a public magnet school. I never said it wasn't.

What kind of parenting is this? Publically exposing your bratty child on internet is not going to have her accept things and come closer to you.

Not the smartest approach.

[edit]
Yeah I just saw the whole thing and I didn't see anything in particular. That is some terrible parenting. I mean I did some stupid crap when I was a teen, but if my parents behaved like he did, I would be resentful today, not love them to death.

Because all kids are created equal, with the same challenges, stubbornness, etc.

Given what she wrote and that this was a second offense, his reaction seems pretty spot on.

And LMFAO at Blackjack200, who equates Facebook with a diary. Apparently you have no idea what Facebook is or how it works. (Apparently the kid didn't know, either )

She is totally going to run away and shack up with a guy.

Also, dad is sleeping with the cleaning lady.

"We have a cleaning lady for a reason, her name is Linda. Not Hannah."

Goddammnit I bust out laughing at that hahaha, and I think the people defending the kid may not have actually listened to the letter. At first I was skeptical but after two or three sentences it was pretty clear she's getting her just deserts. Dad's just giving her a dose of her own medicine, like when you ignore your parents as a kid and then they "can't hear you" for an evening or something.

Just think of what your are saying. He took a gun and used it to shoot a laptop of hers. Take it or throw it away even. But a father who takes a gun and uses it against anything belonging to his daughter no less, he ain't much of a father. That's disgusting and honestly dude is unstable. No parent should ever take a gun and show they'll use it anyway against their kids.

Maybe in the context of your life, it's inappropriate. In the context of my life, it would absolutely be inappropriate. But if guns are part of their everyday lives, it might be the equivalent of you or I putting our foot through it or throwing it in the trash. We need to be careful about projecting our own worldview on a situation like this.

With all sincerity, come on. That is not the smartest way to reach your child. Of course your stupid teenage daughter is going to be.. stupid.

Parenting is about developing a relationship and trust. This isn't the way to do it.

i have seen my dad with a cigarette while fishing but get to talking and not do a damn thing with it besides light it and hold it. its like his brain does it not thinking about it.

I agree that parenting is about developing trust, but too many parents develop the wrong kind of relationship (aka "friends"). From the little evidence we have, we have a man who expects some basic responsibility fulfillment from his children, and one of them keeps going to Facebook to drag the family through the mud and uses every offensive word in the process. Sorry, no amount of warm fuzzy talk is going to fix that attitude.

When you have a 15 year old daughter with the same mentality, you can judge this man's actions.

why didn't he just sell the computer? What kind of idiot destroys something he's already paid for like that?

Yet another dad who has a good reason to be angry but takes stupidity in handling to a whole new level.

No, it is not stupid, you must not have teenagers.

If you whip their ass, Child Protection Services (CPS) is called, assault charges are filed on the dad, the family has to go to court, take anger management class and probably pay a fine. If things go really bad, the dad is convicted and has an assault charge on his record.

If the dad takes his anger out on a physical object, like the laptop, there is nothing the cops can do.

Daughter calls cops - my dad beat me
Cops - we will be right there

Daughter calls cops - my dad destroyed my laptop
Cops - and?

Destroying a physical object is the path of least resistance.

One extreme end to another, both fail.

Retard doormat parents with warm fuzzy talk isn't going to cut it, so is shaming your daughter on internet and freakin' shooting her damn laptop. Locking horn with your teenage kid is the most obtuse approach I've ever seen.

That video will be immortalized on the internet even if they come to good terms. So so stupid of her dad.

My problem isn't the gun use.

Do you have teenage children?

How would you handle the situation?

I'm not a parent yet and I don't pretend to be.

But I know how my parents raised me. I was some stupid ass immature kid back then. My parents didn't shoot my damn laptop or humiliate me on internet. That shit goes deep to a kid. "Well the kid shouldn't have trashed her dad on FB!" That's why she's a stupid kid!? And you're NOT. You flinging mud with her on same level don't cut it.

I did LOTS of trouble making and got into every angle of discipline. My parents didn't give me 'warm fuzzy' talks. But this one time, my mom sat me down and said, "Listen, I love you but you have truly disappointed me this time." Then she just walked away.

Holy shit that touched home deeper than any scolding, grounding, taking away SNES, or punishment I have received.

She wisely retained her relationship with me no matter what shit staining I did to her.

Today, I love both of my parents to death and speak to them few times a week on a personal basis.

As parents, mine were usually pretty moderate but every now and then they'd reach a boiling point that resulted in something 'big'. Mom would cry, dad would shout, I'd lose my PC; something would actually happen.

I guess to me parenting is about 'controlled explosions', they needed that sometimes and so did I; at the time I'd be pissed at them for it but the fact they cared that much really made an impression on me and it reminded me that even though they normally treated me as an equal, that we both knew who was in charge. In retrospect they were probably right more often than not too
