Just to remind every not ALL soccer fan like Beckham... that's including me.

If it's a drawing for Figo, I'd say HOT!

60 mil per year? 60 mil of what? I doubt that soccer clubs can afford to dish out 60 mil in US$ per year for a single player. Not to mention that Beckham can't be the only expensive player on the team, for he can't do anything alone.

Just a game and not a sport? Dude, I know some women that could probably punt you around like Raggedy-Andy. Ego-centric? Definitely. By the way, what sport do you play? I'm assuming you're a highly paid professional athlete, and could easily outperform most women at anything.... ever heard of Billy Riggs and Billy Jean-King? Nevermind. But tell me something, what DOES the inside of a rectum look like?

Ha ha. You can be sure a LOT more people know Beckam than Favre, etc..

But, of course, the world's most famous athlete is Michael Schumacher. ;-)

If you are only talking about the states, then sure. However, he said in the WORLD. Soccer is hugely popular. We just dont follow it as much here.

Well, i agree w/ the mullet comment, but I have to say, Favre is one of the gayest players in the NFL... and wtf does he have to spell his name FaVRe when it?s pronounced FaRVe. That alone boosts his queer factor up a notch. Plus the fact that he likes to suck co... never mind ;p

I hate the packers, but I wouldn't mind them as much if they got rid of Favre.

J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!

oh, and i seriously don't know how people can watch soccer... it has got to be one of the worst sports to WATCH. Playing it isn't so bad.

I'd say that soccer players are generally more famous around the world than football, hockey or baseball players. Soccer is a much more popular sport than any of those.

Oh, and by the way, why are you leaving out NBA players from the most popular athletes group?

As for the most famous/well known, I think that Pele and Ali are the most famous athletes EVAR!

umm... yeah.... and this is your first post...

What does that have to do with anything? I'm glad that there are always new members around here and your post was no better.

As for David Beckham, I didn't know who he was until I lived in England for a year and started watching Football. Lately though, he and Victoria (Posh Spice) have been working hard to break into the US market. And to the guy that was talking about sports being games once women play professionally.... you think Basketball is any less a sport than american football? Less than baseball? Gotta be kidding me.

Just simple example of how popular soccer is outside US. I am sure I don't even need to mention S. America and Europe. So, Asia, this time.

When there was Real Madrid tour last summer in east Asia, including China PR, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan (except N. and S. Korea), many chinese people paid their 'a-month-wage' to just watch Real Madrid players practice. Yeah, how smart Real Madrid marketting people are. They collected money to let people watch they prepare for match. Btw, all the tickets were sold out (not match ticket, practice watch ticket) in like an hour.

Many Japanese girls don't even know what American football is. But they scream when Beckham came, there are bunch of commercials Beckham casted, Beckham has been chosen as a foreign star who wanted to be marry with (Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were below Beckham), and so on. Ah~ Power of Beckham.

Soocer or Football as we know it outside of the USA is the worlds biggest game bar none !
Beckham might be the most highly paid in Football(Soccer) but no where near the highest paid athlete, which goes to the likes of those listed above !

I thought the worlds highest paid athlete was Michael Schumacher. I guess it depends on whether endorsements are included. I've seen estimates of his income this year of 50 to 100 million U.S. Dollars.

i just wanted to say go liverpool. as for beckham being paid 60 million i wouldnt be surprised, but the last report i saw when he was still with united he was getting 40 million pounds which is leaps and bounds more than even a-rod which is the highest paid american sport player,(i think, maybe its mcnabb now...) you gotta remeber the pound is worth more that the dollar, which i thought was odd the first time i saw it because i thought the dollar was the strongest monetary unit for a while.

and for those guys who think soccer is boring to watch i totally felt that way to untill i started watching european soccer, MLS just doesnt have what the premier league has. the pace is much faster and more exciting to watch. theres not so much back passing and waiting and waiting, its alot more attacking.

Agree. In fact, Serie A is a bit boring too, since their style is first defense then attack. Spanish La Liga is another choice to take a look. Their style is speed and technic, but less physical press. But I personally agree Primier league is the best in consideration of excitement.

BTW, even though I am a soccer fan, I cannot agree Beckham is the most paid athlete. His salary is not that high. However, I think he sure is one of the richest athlete, because of money from his activities other than playing soccer, i.e. magazine, commercial, picture, goods, and so on. (Like Micheal Jordan made most of his money from not salaray, but sponsership)

one of the most overrated football players with a pretty face and a bitchy wife... zidane, figo, rinaldinio excel in the business, not to mention the greatest maradona

That's what I said. (Or you can say, "and i doubt American football is known anywhere outside the US")

I agree that. Beckham, sure he is a great player, especially his pin-point pass and cross. His vision is just one of the best. However, it is not just good enough to be the best, I think. I am a fan of Raul, too, btw .

kind of surprised that noone's mentioned Ronaldo since i read somewhere that even though Beckham is so adored in Asia, they would still like to see Ronaldo play even more.

oh, and HoosierDadE, screw up that quote much?

I think the World has bad images of Americans b/c of the very few people like woodscomp.
But it can also be that there are a lot more people like him, but they are red necks and we never see them around. (I assume trailor parks dont have internet connection?)

Anyhoo, Beckham is BIG (other parts of the World), but have to agree that Michael Jordan is bigger.

I don't think Beckham is that good a player tho.
