i have been a fan since .. well, his was the first album i bought with my own money. however, i do not like practically anything he's done in these last years. but, from what i see online, he's had way more fans (by way of collaborating with weirdos like Trent Reznor) from Outside on, rather than before that, when his music was much better .. in my opinion.

call me cynical but i can't help thinking of the people who are crying about Lemmy and have never heard a single Motorhead song.

meh, I don't love most of his music but I don't deny the impact he had on music.

David Bowie was a VERY weird motherfucker. As shown in the changing face gif, he was constantly "re-inventing" himself...as times changed, and as he himself changed.

None the less...he was a very talented musician and none of his weirdness in his personal life can take away from that.

That's a nonsensical conclusion. He charted far better in the 70s and 80s than he has any time since. If it skews towards his later stuff it is only due to the sample you are pulling from, I'd bet money his fan base is more centered on his early stuff than later. If anything I'd think most people would recognize him from "Let's Dance" before "The Hearts Filthy Lesson" or "I'm Afraid of Americans"

That being said Bowie was a genre bender, jumping to new genres and filtering them through his own lens. The collaboration with Reznor was 20 years ago, nearly half his career ago. I think, whether you like the genre or not, the sheer breadth of collaboration work he did is unparalleled.

Plus the reach of Bowie is far far greater than Motorhead. The odds of anyone not having heard a single Bowie song if they are remotely familiar with music is pretty slim.

I get what you're saying though -- most people are comfortable in 1 skin. He was comfortable and confident being a chameleon.

Yeah I'm in that camp. I respect his talent and influence and like several of his songs, but I can't say I'm necessarily a "fan".

He was a Performance Artist that threw himself into his roles. Privately he may have been different, but publicly he stayed in character.

I know an old teacher of mine is probably pretty sad about this. He used to play David Bowie (and a few other alternative rock bands) in class, while we were taking tests, reading to ourselves, or during an occasional 'free time' for the last 15 minutes of class because we were ahead of the curriculum/syllabus. He was a big fan. 80s!
