My Girlfriend has made over a dozen posts on her Facebook this morning expressing her sadness over David Bowie's passing. I asked her if she has ever owned any piece of music by David Bowie. She said "No". Kind of wanted to roll my eyes.

A lot of things make people feel compelled to roll their eyes.

My personal degrees of separation, or . . . dimly reflected light from the peanut gallery:

I lived in London (well, the Woolwhich suburb) in the 70s with a group of actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company. The actor/owner of the house, a truly modest (but talented) guy, said he had once slept with Bowie's then wife (while they were married!), and that she had told him that SHE had created Bowie's persona for him.

I was a young American!

Sad to see him go, but it brings to mind some things:
He kept his illness to himself. This earned even more respect.
After being sad and thinking of his fabulous serious contribution, I laughed.
When I was partying with the neighbor kid, we'd sit down in the basement playing "The Rise and fall..." at a moderate volume until 'Suffragette City', and he'd crank to the max only
'Wham bam thank you Mam', and we'd giggle at the supposed reaction from the oldies upstairs.

TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME!

Ziggy Stardust was one of my first inroduction's to real rock & roll.

This is hitting me unexpectedly hard.

i'm surprised so many people here are bowie fans; hardly ever met another in real life.

While I certainly don't consider myself a fan at all, and really only paid him any mind when his music would play on video or radio, even I feel the loss of this great talent; and I really appreciate David Bowie much more than I had thought I did. The Let's Dance era was what made the first and lasting impression for me, but I somehow feel that many may not consider that as his best work.

As with a certain character's death in Star Wars The Force Awakens, I feel like a family member has passed; because they've been such an organic part of my life due to my age.

What a loss; but his spirit and music certainly live on.

In fact, I think Lady Gaga is the living individual who probably comes closest to what Bowie has historically done. She certainly may not have a cult classic like Ziggy Stardust, but she is quite a multi-dimensional talent in the vain of Bowie.

RIP David, you gorgeous soul.

I knew him better as the Goblin King than as a musician. But he will still be missed. RIP

I think there are a lot more people, myself included, that have a ton of respect and appreciation for his work, that aren't necessary qualified as "fans" throughout the years.

i have been a fan since .. well, his was the first album i bought with my own money. however, i do not like practically anything he's done in these last years. but, from what i see online, he's had way more fans (by way of collaborating with weirdos like Trent Reznor) from Outside on, rather than before that, when his music was much better .. in my opinion.

call me cynical but i can't help thinking of the people who are crying about Lemmy and have never heard a single Motorhead song.

NOOO!!!!!!!!!

I did my radio show yesterday and played around 8 Bowie songs in a row. A woman calls me and asks what's up with that and I tell her and she yells "Fuck! Shit!!" Then she hangs up.
