I've been a coffee drinker off and on for about 5 years. I drink about 3-4 cups per day. I've been struggling for about a year as to whether or not I should kick the habit and I pulled the trigger this week.

So, this is day 5 and I've only had one headache. In addition to the benefit of not buying beans a few times per month, I can also count on dropping about 10 lbs due to the reduced amount of cortisol my body produces.

It was harder to make the decision than to follow through. I'm also softening the blow a bit by drinking tea which has way less cafeine.

Anyone else recently kick this habit or think about giving it up?

I didnt kick coffiee, I kicked pop about 5 years ago and was good about it for like 4 years. I went cold turkey and drank no "pop" bev. but this year I was at a grad party for one of my friends and all they had was pop. so i drank some dr. pepper and got hooked on it again, Now i drink Dr. Pepper and Mt. Dew on a reg basis and I need to quit again. its tough! keep at it. I am going to go cold turkey again with my pop.

Congrats on the quitting. I went cold turkey from a very high amount of caffiene (to drink more than 2 2 liters of Pepsi a day wasn't uncommon), and suffered from the worst headaches for several weeks. After those dropped off, I usually drank gatorade simply because I can't drink plain water.

Lately I find myself drinking caffiene when I need, but I don't feel the need to drink it all the time.

Hmm I used to drink over 4 liters of soda a day... I'm on a diet now for 3 days and haven't had any headaches... How long does it take for those to occur?

If you are caffienated diet pop, they won't occur. I have a headache right now because I only had one 20oz of Diet Pepsi yesterday and no coffee. Caffiene addiction sucks.

True that, and for as long as you kick it, you can get it back just like that. its like drinking booze, you can kick the habbit but one drink will knock the sh!t out of you!

I recently made the switch to decaf, drinking a home made decaf lactose free cappuccino with Splenda as we speak

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I do consume way too much pop.

I would like to stop but everytime I've tried I feel like a really tired sack of sh!t. I'm going to try and slowly go off it. Right now I drink about six cans per day. I did switch to diet a few years ago so at least its not high caloric....but there is probably more caffeine then my heart should handle.

I drink craploads of water, too (probably 6-8 pint glasses per day), but it hasn't helped me quit drinking pop heh.

it takes a really strong will to just cold turkey caffeen. I cant do it right now, I have tried, I drink 2 leters a day, and just cant get off of it. I have tried to cut it down. I am at may be 2. 500 ml bottles so essentally 1 leater of pop! but ARG, its so hard! I will try and go cold turkey right now. From this point on NO MORE POP for me! None! Will keep you updated!

They are not addictive. But if you consume them in large quantities regularly, than your body will "need" the caffeine. Ask anyone who quit drinking coffee or pop in large amounts (6-8 cups per day). They will tell you about horrible migraines, feeling tired and not being able to concentrate.

Congrats on your success -- although personally I would give up food before coffee

LOL, Food before coffee. That addicted?

When I was a grad stiudent I cut my budget to the barest bones -- and I actually did eat less so that I could have coffee

In my defense, though, I have naturally (very) low blood pressure and caffeine is very helpful in elevating it a little. Even my physician said that is a good idea hehe

Never happened to me. I used to drink lots of coffee; at times 10 - 12 cups of regular coffee a day, other times an entire pot of espresso grind coffee. I'm talking years of this kind of coffee drinking, where I had to have coffee every day. Then one day I just started not drinking coffee so much and quit altogether very rapidly. This has happened several times over the years and right now I'm in one of my non-coffee periods. I've always been able to take it or leave it as the current mood suits me.

That's what i was wondering... I could never understand people who drink more then a can of pop in a day... that stuff is just too incredibly sweet... feels like it's rotting my teeth and mouth on contact...

Coffee has never been an "addiction" per se. For me it's more part of a routine in the morning, though it's rare that i actually finish a cup of coffee before leaving for work in the morning.. i might have a cup in the office, but not so much lately. No headaches to speak of, but I haven't really paid any attention to it either..
