Looks like PE has a new smaller Dayton sub, an 8" 80w model for $89 + S/H

Wonder why no specifications have been posted...
I'm guessing the 8" Dayton is probably taller than 12.5". Using the 8" sub as a rough guage, i'd guess the cabinet is anywhere between 14" to 16" tall.Originally posted by: kalrith

That is weird. I went to Dayton's website, and they don't even have the 8" on there. I'd really like to know, because I need a small subwoofer (not taller than 12.5"), and this one's the exact price I've been looking at. Shipping's only $10, which is nice.

Ebay is a decent place to find a smaller, decently priced sub. Keep an eye out for a week or two and you'll probably find what you're looking for.

I've been researching this stuff lately and am in a similar situation as yourself. My situation is i didn't want to spend a lot of money on a secondary home theatre in my home. After reading this AVS forum thread i decided to pick up some advent heritage H200 speakers and the Advent center channel at accessories4less (65% off liquidation + a free shipping coupon) and i researched inexpensive subwoofers to find that the Sony SA-WM250 8" 100w sub had the highest rating in it's low pricerange. It has a boatload of 5 star ratings at Amazon and audioreview. It's frequency response is often goofed up at some websites but the "offical" numbers are 29hz-200hz. I performed a recommended modification by coating the paper cone with Hodge Podge (cheap arts and crafts glue) which definitely tightened the bass up noticeably. While the Sony does not slam as hard as the sub in my main home-theatre (a 12" Bic H100) it also costed $140 less so it is very hard to complain.Originally posted by: kalrith

I realize that, and I do plan to upgrade in a couple of years. However, given my price range, space requirements, and the above choices, does anyone have any input as to which is the best choice...or is it just a toss-up at this price point?
In case it helps, I currently have two Polk R50s driven by a Panasonic XR55.

You can find the Sony for around $89 at CircuitCity, this way if you don't like it, you can always return it. It often goes on sale for $73 shipped at Amazon though .
OR, you can research other better and more expensive 8" subs, then wait for them to turn up on ebay. If i had to pick one of those three subs you listed, i would probably "chance it" with the 8" Dayton, as i've read not so good reviews on the other ones, especially the 8" Bic. Edit: Not sure about that ebay acoustic research sub though, maybe you ought to follow up with more research on that one(?)
Good luck either way you choose
Pretty sure it ought to be ok on it's side, you may have to experiment to see if there's any difference between laying it on it's right or left side though. The 50hz/200hz is actually the crossover adjustment, some ads misprint it as the frequency response, which is def wrong. I mention circuitcity since they are a local option, if you hate the sub then you have an easy and inexpensive way of returning it.Originally posted by: kalrith
I had taken a look at that one, but I was turned off by the specs saying it only goes down to 50Hz. I assume from your review and those of others that this is not the case. At Circuit City, it would be $96 after tax, but Amazon has them for $78 shipped. This might be just the sub I was looking for, and the mod doesn't sound too difficult or expensive. Anyways, I see that it's 14" tall. Do you think it would be OK to turn it on its side?
