Well, if she just wants to be able to see the sky when she gets on the train, there are some other stations that can accommodate her. I think NY Ave/Florida Ave/Gallaudet University is another stop where you go underground for the walk to the platform, but can see the sky once you get to the actual train stop.Originally posted by: murphy55d

youre right, it is.
that is pretty far from the city center though.
wife might just have to suck it up.
(shes a bit claustrophobic, doesnt like the 'underground' stops)
vienna is still above ground, the ticket machines are elevated off the ground since there an overpass is needed to cross 66. you take an elevator down back to ground level. i think orange line go underground after east falls church in VA and stays underground until near the end of the line on the other side in MD.Originally posted by: irishScott
None within the city itself that I know of, and Dun-Loring is above ground, as are West and East Falls hcurch IIRC (haven't ridden it in a while). Vienna's 50/50 (ticket machines and whatnot are above ground, actual station's below.

Oh -- you're planning to walk to the National Mall from there? Definitely NOT recommended unless you take a cab. The neighborhood around the convention center and NY Ave. is not the greatest.Originally posted by: murphy55d

yeah this might be a good one here..
what kind of area is this? ive never been over that way.
we're going down in 2 weeks, is it a far walk from the museums and stuff? its hard to tell just from the railway map. doesnt look too far from union station though.

heres the plan... we're staying out in Tysons Corner(she wants to go shopping at the malls there), coming in on the orange line, and i planned to get off at Farragut west and hit the National Aquarium, then i had planned on walking to the mall and stuff. i dont think its TOO far and quite frankly the exercise wouldnt hurt.
then spend the day doing museumy stuff, then back to the orange line and Dunn Loring stop. ive never even been in a cab. what would that run me to get to the NY ave stop?
its ok if we get OFF at an underground one, she just doesnt wanna go DOWN into one. dont ask. i dont.
is there a better plan to get all of that accomplished?
i dont know if she wants to go to the zoo or not, if she does she may just have to endure the metro ride.

LOL -- she would NOT like going down into the Woodley Park/Zoo station. That one, along with Wheaton, Dupont Circle and Rosslyn, are the four longest escalators in the system. It takes over 2 minutes to descend.
It would probably cost you about $20-$25 to take a taxi to NY Ave. from the Mall. A bit pricey if you ask me. Farragut West isn't too deep and Smithsonian is one of the more shallow stations too. Either one shouldn't be too bad for her phobia. But getting all the way back to NY Ave would take forever and cost a lot, from the National Mall.
