We've got an update: Kazaa exec defends sleeper software

Snip:

"Nothing from (Brilliant Digital) has been downloaded which breaches Sharman's or industry standards of users' privacy protection," Hemming wrote in a statement. Brilliant Digital has simply acted in "much the same way that major software publishers such as AOL, Microsoft and RealNetworks (do to) deploy components for future functions," she added. ...

Bermeister said in an interview Monday that Altnet would get people's permission before using their computers. When the network is activated, a pop-up box will appear and ask if the computer user wants to participate. Those who do participate will be compensated, possibly with gift certificates or free videos, he said.

The disclosure of the sleeper network set off a firestorm of criticism among Kazaa users, however. Kazaa has been downloaded well over 20 million times since early February, creating a huge base of people who might be affected.

I've got build 10 of KazaaLite installed, ran Ad-Aware 5.7 before installing, and modified my HOSTS file as described on the KazaaLite page, fired it up, and ran Ad-Aware again... nothing installed that's not supposed to be there! The CyDoor file is a dummy... info HERE

If we turn the BS translator on... to

Basically they're saying that it will be stuck in the bottom of the EULA agreement and everyone who has already installaed it has already agreed to allow this. Also, you agree that should a method come about to remove/disable these 'functions' they can automatically update the software in the background without your knowledge (or simply require the latest version in order to connect). As hacks come out to disable this, they can simply update against it and require the latest version to connect.

The sad thing is 90% of the users out there won't even know this, the other 9% won't mind, the other 1% is us.

When your machine attempts to resolve a name it looks at your hosts file before it queries DNS. If you had an entry for say doubleclick's ad server in there with an address of 127.0.0.1 (or anything other than the real address) it would redirect anything destined for that name to the address you specify. If you put an entry for a machine in there with the local loopback address you effectively prevent your machine from being able to connect to that server, which in this case, is a good thing.

Thanks guys ,so aside from the 127 etc number what exactly would put in the line for Kazaa or Doubleclick in the hosts file?

Btw I see no signs of Kazaa lite having spyware

i posted about that on other forums...

It's a shame already this subject (b3d p2p client installed ) goes under "distributed computing" here on the forum...i think it would rather have a more fitting place in a forum like "Scams and Fraud"....and i dont know how many people actually *realize* what's going on.

Maybe here on anadtech there is a big number of people who know what a p2p client is....but think about the average user..not to mention the average "AOLer"....

Basically it means using your PCs CPU power and resources...and HOSTING of spam on YOUR equipment (your harddisk !)...using YOUR network bandwith for purposes like spam and marketing..for THEIR purposes !!! Did anyone ask you...or did they explain in detail what programs they will install when you downloaded kazaa ? I was not asked...and i did not give permission to share MY resources/computer for their marketing purposes...and even if i DID i would want to be paid......i have better things to do than wasting my already limited dialup bandwith with an additional spam transfer and hosting of ads on my equipment !!!!!!

Do you realize what these people intend to do ? They want to de-centralize internet spam and advertizing...using p2p technology basically it means that YOU are hosting the spam...and YOU are sending the spam to the next user...who again will host/transfer ads and send it to another user...and so on..and so on....the net (the "spam-net") literally gets a life on his own...and there is no need for centralized servers...so the spam/ads CANNOT be stopped ONCE the network is active ! (The only function of the marketing company might be to "feed" some main p2p nodes with some initial advertizing.....but the REST...all the traffic is done be USERS..on their expenses...on their equipment !

Do you want to explain how to de-install (its TOUGH btw !!!) the b3d software to...say 5 million AOL users to stop that ????? Impossible !!!!

These people have to be stopped immediately !!

If they have success with their (in my opinion INCREDIBLE shady) practices there will be OTHER companies......sooner or later the whole internet will be literally filled with millions of computers who host spam/ads....who use their PC idle-times to further boost the development and spreading of spam...forced content overlaid on websites.....etc. etc....

I think its also INCREDIBLE that a few weeks ago there was a thread about new "security laws" debated...whether it may soon be the case computers have to comply to certain security standards...to be "allowed" to go on the internet....and at the same time it's possible things like this happen !

* this is an extreme violation of our all privacy !

I'll second flexy on this one... My life as an IT guy could be sooo much simpler if it wasn't for the massive rise in SPAM over the last few years... and I mean more than just the spam email which is the bain of everyones life i suspect, but spyware, hidden backdoors on websites etc etc etc... All this junk is so closely related to security and the invasion of your privacy that we absolutely HAVE to act now in order for this not to completely take over our lives... Those damn marketing people have a lot to answer for, soon the net will become no more than an extended US TV advert break (and we all know how many and how long they can be!!)

I personally have already instructed my colleagues and friends on where to get Kazaa lite if they must use P2P technology (which incidentally we have banned the use of within our company). I had to stop running SETI on my work boxes a few months back as the usage time was not condusive with the working times of our developement team, this type of stuff could severly impact working practises and efficiency if it becomes "popular". BDE claim they are going to ask permission of people first... how many companies to follow will hide the permission away in the Termz of Service (yes I still think Sharman are l33t hehe ), so they dont need to ask your permission any longer, it'll just happen... ??

Its downright sneaky and downright unethical to utilise someone elses property in this way... Its like me going round to Ass1's house and asking to use his computer, him saying yes and then me walking out the door with it, and not bringing it back.. well he did say I could use it...

(would this be a bad thing ?? I dunno hehehehehe your thoughts can be posted in a seperate poll lol.. I'm only joking Ass1 )

At least in that case, the Termz (I'm almost as l33t as Sharman) can be negotiated, with software, the only negotiation is "say yes or your cattle trucked". There is no negotiation its cut and dry.......
(would this be a bad thing ?? I dunno hehehehehe your thoughts can be posted in a seperate poll lol.. I'm only joking Ass1 )

Anyhow thats my rant over.. .go tell everyone, go complain to anyone you can.. This kinda stuff has to be put to bed before it gets out of hand..

Don't forget to remove the (silent) upgrader in the registry.
