Been to the re-done DD-WRT pages, and now firmware list that "Professional Activation" is required, and links you to the DD-WRT store.

WTF???

I thought it was licensed under GNU? So, like other linux distros...are they requiring payment for support?

As far as I can see none of the entry level units that are used by most End-User is in the Activation Category.

Writing firmware isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. It takes a lot of time and patience. People are lucky they get any release of the firmware for free.

There are other free third party firmwares depending on what router you are using.
Tomato, Hyper WRT, Phoenix, and other.

You may find one for your router and use here.

Thanks for the link, very interesting read indeed. Explains why it costs money, it's not in compliance with the GPL, and some included code doesn't have a GPL or licensing from the original copyright holders.

Is there an alternative that has inbound VPN / PPTP services? Last time I tried tomato it did not, and I haven't looked at Hyper WRT in a long while.

Tomato with VPN.

Another VPN version.

There are many "customized" versions of Tomato out there, with many being more stable and with many more features than stock Tomato. VPN, USB, overclocking (yes, overclocking the router's CPU, lol), etc. Not sure about the PPTP service though.

dman, if you're comfortable with a UNIX-like system such as Linux, OpenWRT is by far the best / most powerful choice. If you are not, there are several choices (see Engineer's list) that are more web-GUI flavored in the way of DD-WRT and the stock firmware. I'm not as familiar with all the web-GUI oriented choices because I use OpenWRT, but I know that there's a good ecosystem of them.

Thanks for the links. I'm not great with the unix command line stuff, and DDWRT has a lot of WIKI/how-to's that guide me along where needed (not in the gui). I'll have to invest some time and catch up on these alternatives.

I really liked the bandwidth features of Tomato when it became popular but missed the VPN so went back. Looks like a lot of progress has been made. I currently have the megabuild of wrt running fine on an older WRT54GL router, which also has the bandwidth monitoring and statistics, vpn, ipv6, QOS, etc. It's also been very stable. I will likely try one of these alternatives out, see if it helps on QOS as others have suggested.
